Assume your favorite college football team finishes the regular season 12-1. From a fan's standpoint, would you prefer they play in the BCS championship game and lose, or play in a major bowl (Orange, Fiesta, Rose, Sugar) and win - thus ending the season on a high note, with a better record, and probably a higher final ranking? Also assume the win will not give your team any part of a national championship. Using a real life example; would you rather be USC or Oklahoma?
