The latest news on the 49ers stadium plans are that they might have to share a new facility with the raiders.
I'm giving you plenty of time to laugh at that. Al Davis share a stadium? Yeah right. He's more secretive than the CIA.
Anyway, the reason is the bad economy. This wouldn't even have been an issue except for the negativity of people on the Santa Clara City Council & the hatred of the company that owns the land.
Here's the story for non bay area people. The 49ers want to build a new stadium, not in San Francisco, but rather next door to their permanent practice facility & headquarters in Santa Clara, which is 40 miles south. The land being considered is a parking lot for the Great America Theme Park, the northern California equivalent of Disneyland, without Mickey or other famous characters. It instead uses Paramount figures like Star Trek & movies. It is owned by a company in Ohio, which has never wanted the stadium to go forward.
Why? I don't know. It wouldn't interfere with the park because Great America shuts down after Labor Day due to northern California being cooler in fall, & not having the tourism base LA has. So why be against it? The Ninersa have even discussed buying the park, but the company has said no to that also. It is highly suspicious to me why this has gone on for so long. As to the city government, they make excuses having to do with traffic, since it's a major business area. The area where the stadium would be built is almost exclusively high tech. But light rail would run almost next door so that shouldn't be an issue. AT&T park, home of the SF Giants is a residential/business areA, With light rail & Caltrain/Amtrak right there. HP Pavilion, home of the NHL San Jose Sharks is across the street from Caltrain/Amtrak with light rail a few blocks away. Again no traffic problems. So I am confused. I just know the Niners need a stadium.
