The college football season in 2009 may turn out to be one of the best in recent memory, as an incredible number of top junior players have decided to return to school. The SEC is always the conference catching the eyes and ears of college fans, and widely considered top to bottom the strongest in college football.
I will not break down every team in the conference, as many have no chance at competing for a trip to the SEC Championship game. I will instead focus on the teams that will fight to the final weeks, or that we are accustomed to seeing year after year near the top.
Here we go:
1. Alabama: Proved in their bowl game and matchup with Florida (WITHOUT Harvin their best playmaker) that they can't compete with above average team speed and an option/spread offense. They also lose their QB and top RB Coffee which hurts an already ailing offense down the stretch. Utah exposed 'Bama, and the SEC took notice. They will break down the film second by second, and be better prepared for Saban the next time around.
2. Georgia: Loses Moreno AND Stafford at the same time, which will cripple an offense that attempted to carry a weaker than usual Bulldog defense in '08. They gave up 30 or more points 4 times, including 45 POINTS to an ACC team in GT, one of the least respected major conferences in all of college football.
3. LSU: Destroyed this same Georgia Tech team, and held them to only 3 points in their bowl game. This shows how mediocre Georgia's usually great defense truly was, as LSU was losers of 4 OF THEIR LAST 6 coming in, with their only wins coming over Tulane and Troy....wow. They are not the same Tigers we are accustomed to at all. A 3-5 SEC showing is enough in itself to write them off for 2009.
4. Auburn?: Not even worth discussing at 5-7 and 2-6 in conference
5. Ole Miss?: Excellent turnaround season and showed a lot of promise with a GREAT young QB who will only get better in Jevan Snead. I will actually go out on a limb and pick them to upset Alabama and claim the SEC West title in '09. They played as good as anyone down the stretch, going 6-0 to finish the season. They defeated Florida, LSU, and Texas Tech in '08, as well as nearly taking down #2 Alabama.
The problem is you saw what happened to Tim Tebow and the Gators following that upset loss last year to Ole Miss. He refused to lose, and they never did, winning the BCS Title. If you think for a second that Tebow will allow the same team that almost cost him his dreams to beat him 2 years in a row...you are out of your MIND...
Predicted SEC Champ: This brings me back to the SEC Champion and BCS Title Game representative for 2009...The Florida Gators. They most likely lose Harvin, but return an EXCELLENT and improving young RB core, Tebow, as well as returning one of Tebow's favorite targets in TE Aaron Hernandez (a truly blossoming TE option).
Brandon Spikes has also surprisingly returned to school with Tebow, to help anchor an incredible Gators defense. The leadership on both sides of the ball returns, and WR is the easiest skill position to refill with a solid recruiting class. They still sport one of the best Kick returners in all of college football as well in Brandon James.
Florida has signed the #2 and #12 WR prospects in the entire country to help ease the loss of Harvin and Murphy, and they will rely on Demps and Moody more in the rushing attack in place of Harvin's reverses.
It will not be easy to replace Harvin, but it is something teams do every year. Texas and Oklahoma were COMPLETELY unaffected with the departures of Malcolm Kelly and Limas Sweed. With McCoy and Bradford returning, the offenses were able to pick up the pieces and move on.
The same will happen in Florida, with arguably the best player in all of college football returning to play QB for the Gators. It will be a struggle as always in the SEC, but 'Superman' Tim Tebow will once again be representing the SEC in the BCS bowls...most likely the biggest of them all for the 3rd time in 4 years.

Well first of all it's 'writer' and 'write'...and 'they're' not there... but i appreciate the comment, and every writer will have his critics. That's the beauty of the sports world.
As i said in my piece, LSU was losers of 4 of their last 6 heading into their bowl game, beating only Troy and Tulane in that stretch. You gave up 50+ points to the same Gator team you seem to believe that you can compete with in '09.
The Gators return a QB and leader with a Heisman, 2 National Titles, and the heart and will of a champion. He announced his team would never lose again last year after Ole Miss, and they didn't. They trampled everyone in their path on their way to the BCS Title.
Florida returns ALL 11 starters to an incredible defense that helped produce a total margin of victory of 150 POINTS over 4 ranked opponents including your LSU Tigers. The others were South Carolina, Florida State, and Georgia. They allowed only 12.8 ppg and will only get better with another year under their belt perfecting the scheme and their assignments.
LSU is a very respectable program, has a gutsy head coach, and just brought in a solid defensive coordinator. The problem is that the Gators only lost 1 important player from a team that embarrassed you last season. The Tigers lose their top 2 receivers, and will have issues running a potent enough offense to challenge top SEC teams without a proven QB or WR.

Nice blog. I don't think Alabama will repeat 2008's miracle run, but it is not because of the QB and RB departures. Unless Alabama can replace Andre Smith and Caldwell, their All American offensive linemen, then the offense will stall. The line was the heart and soul of the team, and Smith not playing in the bowl game really exposed Bama's lack of depth along the front.
Wilson graduating and Coffee going pro might actually lead to an upgrade at those 2 positions for Alabama..
Ole Miss will be strong again, especially with Hardy coming back.
LSU had some bad luck, but also I had the feeling that Miles lost the team after their loss to Alabama. I don't know how else to explain dropping a game to Arkansas. If he can recapture their fire, then it will be an entertaining SEC west battle in 09.
In the east there is Florida. Anyone else is deluding themselves as long is Tebow is behind center.

Thank you very much for the compliments on the blog and for commenting...
I am very happy to hear from a strong SEC supporter and one living in the heart of Alabama. It is excellent to get a perspective from someone who is around the action and has some insider knowledge that i may not be able to obtain up here in NY/NJ. Great input.

Don't forget we will return not 11 players but acutally 22 on defense. That is a whopping 2 deep at every position. Go Gators , And everone knows big defense wins all the big games ,, just ask those sooners. The icing on top is we return 7 on offense but acutally 8 by counting 6 year midical redshirt senior Conilous Ingram.

Totally understandable Dallas4eva...and very mature of you to apologize.
I am a Yankees, Wolverines, and Giants fan, so i am used to the intense rivalries that exist with the Red Sox, Cowboys, and Ohio State Buckeyes. Things are said in spirit that aren't meant the way they are said.

The Bronx,
Very professional blog, your blogs are always well thought out and in a very orderly fashion.
But that doesn't mean that I will always agree with the content. To say that Auburn is not even worth discussing because of their 2-6 conf. record could be a mistake. By that same logic, after Ole Miss went belly up in the 07 season, they weren't worthy either and look how 08 turned out for them! Of course Auburn wont have Houston Nutt on the sidelines but I'm just saying...

Very fair and valid point Norka. I would not be completely shocked if they were able to finish .500 in conference, or even 5-3 like Ole Miss achieved in '08.
The problem is that a 4-4 or 5-3 conference record will not compete for the SEC Championship. As excellent as Ole Miss's season turned out to be, they still finished 3 GAMES out of the SEC West Title hunt. On top of that, winning a 2nd game against Florida and Tim Tebow was still ahead of them to win the SEC even if they had somehow gone 8-0 in conference and got in.
It is a 2-year process in my opinion to win the SEC Championship off a 2-6 conference record. Ole Miss can build off of last season's success, with a returning stud DE and a star QB in the making. They can take it to the next level in '09, where as Auburn will not be able to turn around from 2-6 to the necessary 7-1 in conference, far too large a task.
You are completely right that the conference is so good and deep with talent that any program can have a turnaround similar to Ole Miss. As stated earlier though, that still would put them as close to the bottom of the conference as the top, at least 2 games out of the hunt even with a dramatic turnaround.

Here we go again Bronx, this time LSU.
You wrote that since LSU went 3-5 (ouch!) in the SEC and "that in itself is enough to write them off for 09". They should should be much improved with Jordon Jefferson at QB and If their D picks up where it left off at the Chick-fil-A bowl, they win the SEC West. Yippee!
And then in the SEC title game, they upset the Gators!
You can wright them off if you want, but I'm naught!

This is why you shouldn't be writing about the SEC, the same with all you northern "analysts".
You post a blog on FanNation... real power trip there.
It will be a 3 way tie for the West with Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss. In the East, Florida should rank supreme, followed by a a struggling Georgia team and a South Carolina team who's still trying to figure out its identity. The East is a toss up after Florida...
Alabama plays everyone to their potential. Don't look at the Utah game, because if you are such a good sports analyst, you would agree that Alabama didn't want to win that game in the first place. They lose to Florida then Andre Smith gets in trouble... they had it all sucked out of them. If I'm not mistaken, Alabama had the lead going into the 4th in the SEC Championship and was staying up there with Florida, if it wasn't for a couple of really stupid individual mistakes that gave them poor field advantage.
Once again, stick to commenting on hockey and the Jersey Shore because the SEC is definitely NOT your forte.

1st of all i don't see why posting a blog on FanNation is a power trip..that's a main focus of the site...fan blogs.
2nd...So i pick Florida to win the SEC EAST convincingly, outline Georgia's struggles from '08 moving into '09, pick Ole Miss to win the SEC WEST...you agree with all 3...and say it's not my forte and don't deserve to write about it...ok then
3rd 'Bama was playing Florida without their best offensive weapon Percy Harvin...and if you want to know how much of an impact he makes on a game, then go ask Oklahoma what an only 90% Harvin did to them in the Title game.
Not to mention Alabama loses their best 2 lineman, starting QB, and starting RB to the draft among others...while Florida returns Tebow, 3 great young RB's, the best KR in college football, and ALL 11 STARTERS ON DEFENSE...a defense that was already a close 2nd to USC's for best overall unit in the country. They also bring in 2 of the best WR recruits in the country. Florida was better than Alabama last season, and will be even further ahead in '09.
Sorry Andrew...i know you are in pain watching Fulmer and Chavis leave the Tennessee program amidst complete chaos and disarray...it must be very difficult to deal with and i sympathize with you. No need to attack me or my blog because you are frustrated.
LSU is not going from 3-5 in conference to a conference Title and trip to the BCS Title game in 1 season..Florida absolutely embarrassed them in '08 and nothing is going to change with Tebow and that defense returning.

Sorry didn't mean to post another comment like that, computer messed up and didn't show the previous one till I posted the other one. I'm an FSU fan, and I was kinda sarcastic about it. But yeah, I guess a conference preview for the ACC would be cool.
