I would like to send a message to all St. Louis sports fans:  The Arizona Cardinals are NOT your team.

I realize that StL sports are dismal right now and you would love something to cling to.  Ideally, at this time of year, you're excited about the Rams, the Blues, the Cards' off-season maneuvers, and maybe even college hoops.   Not this year, folks.  The Rams sucked on toast the last two years and will likely do so for a long time to come.  The Blues made the playoffs for 25 straight years and then fell apart with no end in sight.  This will be their fourth straight year of not reaching the playoffs and it ain't getting better any time soon.  For the last 5 years, Cardinal offseason activity has been a joke.  They pretend to seek important free agents that will help the team win a Series, and they end up offering guys like Brian Fuentes half his market value.   The biggest offseason signing this year will likely be to bring back Isringhausen, who's single handedly blown more games for this team than anyone since Ray Ray the Rally Killer Lankford!  Mizzou basketball is a joke, and you still refuse to acknowledge there's actually a D-I hoops team in StL.   I get it.  I grew up in StL and still love the Cards, Billikens, and Blues. I'm as bored with sports as you are this winter.

So you feel lost, you feel sad, you have nothing to cheer for, and nothing to bet on.  You're considering actually doing work around the house on the weekends.  But wait! St. Louis' old football team is in the Super Bowl with St. Louis' old quarterback.  You used to pretend to be a Cardinal fan and you liked Warner until you started calling him a washed up bum in 2002.  No one would notice if you just started cheering for the Big Red again, would they?  Yes, they would, because THIS IS NOT YOUR TEAM!

The Cardinals played years of sub-par football in StL until attendance was so dismal and revenue was so lousy that Bill Bidwill took the team to AZ in 1987.  He shafted an already floundering downtown out of another sports team.  Racism cost you your NBA team and Bill Bidwill cost you your NFL franchise.  The city spent millions of dollars trying to get an NFL expansion team and was beat out by Jacksonville and Carolina.  So, they spent millions more to bring the Rams to town, inheriting someone else's problem child just like AZ did in 1987.  You pretended to like the Rams the first year, but they sucked, so your interest waned.  Then, in that "magical" year of 1999, your franchise quarterback went down with injury, Warner stepped in, and, thanks to Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, and Ricky Proehl, StL finally won a Super Bowl.  You loved Warner and thought he was the second coming of Christ, just like he does.  Then in 2000, you thought he was a bum.  In 2001 you loved him, but after that he was such a bum he was given his outright release in 2004.  But now the Big Red is good, and three fantastic receivers are again making Warner look better than he is, so you want to be a fan.

Stop now before you embarrass yourself.  St. Louis is a fair weather football town, but don't let this be another bandwagon you jump on.  Try and remember the past so you don't repeat it, again.  Wait a month, buy a Yadier Molina Puerto Rico jersey, and watch the World Baseball Classic instead.

Wow, Cardinals make their very first bowl ever and their fans are getting THIS cocky?!

In AZ you can't fill that stadium during a regular season game. You should be welcoming all the fan support you can get, from St. Louis or otherwise.

Cardinal fans from St. Louis were probably supporting THEIR Cardinals before you were born ...

January 19, 2009  01:13 PM ET

wow someone is actually wanting the Cardinals...now that's a 1st!

January 19, 2009  01:18 PM ET

hey!

January 19, 2009  01:31 PM ET

Did the same apply to Baltimore Colts fans, Oakland Raider fans when they moved to LA, NY Giants fans when they moved to San Francisco etc?

January 19, 2009  03:02 PM ET

BigLar, you shouldn't worry about other people embarrassing themselves, when you pathetically embarrass yourself with this idiotic post. From reading your tripe, it is obvious you know little to nothing about the St.Louis sports scene and the history of the Cardinals there.

I'll address your idiocy point by point.

First, the Cardinals did not offer Fuentes half his market value. They offered him about $750K less that what he got with Anaheim. The guy simply wanted to be in California. I do not like they way the Cardinals have handled the off-season, but they were right not to overpay for Fuentes. There is little indication that they have plans to bring back Isringhausen, either.

Second (and I realize you are the expert, but it's spelled Bidwill, not Bidwell), Bill Bidwill caused all of his own problems in St. Louis. Fan support for the Big Red in St Louis was tremendous, untill Bidwill's inept ownership and penny-pinching ways finally alienated a large number off fans and led to reduced attendance. In short, Bidwill wanted a new stadium, but wanted to pay for nothing, instead putting the entire burden on the taxpayers. When he didn't get his way, he pouted, badmouthed St. Louis and moved the team. Although many of us will never forgive him for this, many of us also never stopped being Cardinal fans. I can assure you that even though I am from STL, the Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals have had no one that has been a bigger fan than me, over the last 21 years......so yes, they ARE my team.

Oh, and they were called the Big Red during their time in St Louis......the Big Red Machine was the Cincinnati Reds, genius.

Third, St. Louis wasn't beaten out by Carolina and Jacksonville.....this was a pre-arranged Tagliabue special, as the commish had a clear bias against St. Louis. Compare the attendance figures of the Jags and the Rams over the last 13 years, and it becomes obvious that St. Louis SHOULD have been the expansion choice in 1995.

Finally, Kurt Warner was never called a bum by most fans in St. Louis. Public opinion was definitely that he should have been kept in St. Louis and not jettisoned the way he was by Martz. Warner is still beloved in the city of St. Louis. Where you get that he was ever despised in St. Louis is beyond me. The Rams released him.....not the fans. Warner has always drawn more cheers with the Cardinals in St. Louis than any of the Rams.

Get a clue before you post idiotic commentary again, please.

January 19, 2009  05:41 PM ET

Well, if you were going for idiotic commentary, you got it right.

I don't know how long you lived in STL, but you are so far off base on almost everything you said, it's not funny.

I didn't even touch your mis-informed opinions on the Blues. Yes, they've been down since they payrolled dumped Pronger, Demitra, etc following the work stoppage, but you say they are down and out and that things "ain't getting better anytime soon". That proves that you have no freaking idea about the state of the Blues. Yes, they'll likely miss the playoffs this year, but Davidson has been stockpiling young talent for a couple of years, and this team will be a force in the West within two years. If you really think they are going nowhere in the near future.....just remember the names Berglund, Oshie, Pietrangelo, Perron and Eric Johnson and come back in a year or two and tell me they aren't going anywhere. This Blues team is so poised to rise up over the next couple of years it's ridiculous.

Your rants give STL a bad name......and your rants are mis-informed.

Typical Idiot from the mile high ****

January 19, 2009  06:13 PM ET

Have you actually watched a Blues game Mr BigLar they may have a bad record but if you like hochey they are fun to watch and are LOADED with young talent they will be a force NEXT YEAR not in a 2 yrs. They just beat the crap out of the Bruins and I witnessed it firsthand at the game in person.

BigLar, I am both refreshed and challenged by your unique point of view. For that I thank you as well as pity your state of intelligence.

I am refreshed because most individuals tend to hide their ignorance of events and presumptions of others thoughts and feelings. Many individuals tend to live a life of "hidden decency" I applaud you for being so open with your misguided opinions. I'm sure your therapist will be proud of your breakthrough. (I'm not sure what your problem is...but I will venture to guess that its difficult to pronounce.)

I am challenged in the sense that I understand what your trying to say...but I still think your full of crap and other than vague opinion and innuendo have not supported your hurt and distress over the fan base of the Cardinals. Perhaps at your next session with Mr./Mrs. Therapist you should discuss your misplaced concern for others.

Let individuals deal with their own conscience on their football loyalties. You insult true fans of the Cardinals with your word vomit.

In summary...interesting post....full of crap...have a nice day!

Word vomit.........I like that..........

Wow, these comments are hosed up.

come on man, you can do better than this! sure, sports in st. louis is down right now, however, nothing stays down for long, not this town, this economy and not this country. success in sports goes in cycles and any fool knows that and with that being said, we'll be back, the rams have some new people in place that actually know football, the blues are young and improving, the bilikens are young and getting better, mizzou football has had its 3-4 winning season in a row and the mens bball team may finally get back to the tournament this year, and the cards, well, thats another story. Don't toot your horn now that the Football Cardinals having gotten to the promised land, it's been 60 years dude, come on! Your attempt at blasting people about their feelings toward the rams is ridiculous; The Rams had sellouts for the majority of the time that they have been here, last season was the first season that the Rams had been blacked out since the black rule went into effect. I can somewhat agree that Rams fans are somewhat wishy-washy but I believe for the most part, we just want a team to actually be in the hunt, not just show up. I've been a fan since they've been here, win lose or draw so I'm down when they suck.

There are still tons of people her in St. Louis, who are still cardinals fans regardless, simply because they were here for 27 years and it was THEIR team. The cardinals left because of St. Louis politics and idiot Bill Bidwill. He wanted a new stadium and they didn't want to give him one so he moved to the desert where he still didn't get a stadium for freaking 20+years. But people in St.Louis still pulled for the Cards in AZ despite that, and they still hated Bidwill. People also root for the cards because of Kurt Warner! Most people here felt he got the shaft while he was here by Mike Martz and others in the organization. You don't bench or release a 2 time NFL MVP, Super Bowl MVP and Super Champ simply because he got hurt. You let the back play until he gets better. I moved to St. Louis shortly after the cards left (88) so I have no vested interest in them no more than the fact that I was a Warnerite and hated that they ran him out of town. We haven't been jack since he left! I hope the Cardinals win, not for the people of AZ or because I like the Cards, but because I like Kurt Warner. If if wasn't for Kurt, you'd have Matt Lineart and you'd be sitting at home pulling for the Falcons, Eagles or Panthers cuz you guys would be waiting another 60 years to get to a bowl.
