We're less than 48 hours from the start of Super Bowl XLIII, and as I promised (responding to a TD), my explanation of why I feel we're in for a shocker for the 2nd straight year.
That's right, gang. Though my gut says the Steelers, I'm going with Arizona to pull this one out. But this isn't so much about the Cardinals per se, as it is more of a personal wish.
For my uncle.
My uncle lives in the Phoenix area, and has since around '74 or so. He used to be an pilot for Western Airlines (before Delta swallowed them up) until he retired close to 10 or 11 years ago. Anyway, the fact was he and his family were Cardinal fans...St. Louis (football) Cardinals, that is. Remember, they didn't move the franchise out to Phoenix until '89.
But that's not why I'm writing this piece.
Sometime before Thanksgiving in '03, my uncle was involved in a single car crash that left him in a coma for about 4-5 months. He came out of that, but physically he doesn't get around like he once did. And, since my dad died in July of last year, my uncle is the last surviving member of his immediate family...which makes him the de facto head of the clan now.
So you can imagine what it's been like out there to see the Cards in the Super Bowl. In fact, I sent him an e-mail right after the NFC Championship game telling him hell must've froze over. He sent one back telling me it's been crazy out there the whole time.
And that would've been the end of this blog...if it hadn't been for reading Michael Wilbon's column today.
Which got me to thinking...
Quick, what's the climatic scene in "Jerry Maguire"??? Thought about it?? Could it be...???
The fricking Arizona Cardinals WIN the fricking Super Bowl!!!
So you can forgive me, if I watch Sunday afternoon and hope that the Cards...the REAL ones, not the ones in the movie...can pull this sucker off. Because I have to be honest, my uncle doesn't have that long to live; I mean, he'll be 73 this year, but I'm afraid this may be his LAST shot at seeing Arizona make another playoff run (let alone celebrating a Super Bowl win).
But if they DO shock the football world on Sunday, the first 4 words I put in the e-mail I send to my uncle will be plain and simple:
"SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!!"
