Kurt Warner deserved the 2008 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

Matt Birk and Brian Dawkins are fine men and are to be commended on their work with charities and such.

But Kurt Warner didnt just establish a foundation and raise funds. He put 1.5 million of his own money into Habitat for Humanity so people could achieve the American Dream of owning a home.

He put his money where his mouth is.

That is an amazing thing in this day of the spoiled and pampered athlete. In today's spoerts climate you are a millionaire before you have played at the professional athlete. As long as you perform at the collegiate level you can be a millionaire without proving yourself.

Unlike today's athlete Warner didnt sign a fat contract. He was working in a grocery store and played Arena League ball to support his family. He came to the NFL through the avenue many have.

The School of Hard Knocks.

Now a lot of people might say, "So what? Its a tax deduction!"

Does it matter?

At the end of the day he is putting his money where his mouth is and helping people achieve something far greater than winning a football game.

He is somebody Walter Payton would be glad to know.

Its a shame they couldnt have met.

Both were class acts.

Well said, and to the point. Kurt is a good man, and unfortunately we hear so little about athletes and their good deeds. It's sad that the negatives are always highlighted before the positives.

Great blog dj. It's ont thing to put money into a foundation that you had started. But to drop 1.5 mil into another, that's saying something about that man. I have seen a few things on Warner that made me like the QB on the field more. It's easy to root for someone with his class.
