This is how I feel about NASCAR's duels and whole qualifying procedures for the 500. They talk about saving the teams money and all, but I don't think they realize the cost of having to do a couple of practice sessions for qualifying day on Sunday and then run the practices for the duels and then, should you make it in, it's practice for the 500. The costs to keep your team there and/or fly them back the few days they aren't running is out of hand. Here is my solution to the above issue and I think other fans would like it as well. 1. Scrap the Sunday qualifying day & the practices for it. There's a cost savings there of a about three days. 2. The only driver locked in, is the previous years champion no matter where he finishes. 3. Use the word duel for what it really means. 4. Use a random draw, like they do for the qualifying, for the outside row and inside row. The driver would have to finish in the top 22 in one race & the top 21 in another. 5. No buying your way in as in past years. I know that isn't how it works in corporate america but, it could be put to a stop if NASCAR wanted to. By doing this format it would have the following results: 1. Owners save money. 2. The playing field is somewhat level by the best driver/car getting in. 3. Gives the media something to hype up. (not that they don't do that already) 4. The fans get to see some REAL heartpounding and INTENSE racing. 5. The one car teams or sponsorless teams can "hand" it to the bigger funded teams. Of course this is my opinion and you know what they say about that!!
