I was watching the NFL network the other day and they were talking about nicknames of players from 20 to 30 years ago. They said you don't have nicknames of players today. They just use initials. If you have any nicknames today, it usually has some kind of rapper connotation.
They talked about Rocky Bleir of the Steelers whose nickname within the team was Prunjuice. They said he was the anti O.J. Ken Anderson was nicknamed Candlelight by his Bengal teammates. The reason - one blow and he was out. We had Billy "White Shoes" Johnson of the Houston Oilers because he wore white shoes in a black shoe era. Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson of the Cowboys. We know all about Mean Joe Greene of the Steelers. The defense nicknamed the Iron Curtain. The Dolphins D nicknamed the No Name Defense. The Four Horseman. Murder's Row.
Earl "The Pearl" Monroe of the Knicks, Jim "Catfish" Hunter of the A's of the '70's. The Big Red Machine for the Cincinnati Reds of the '70's, the "Bad Boys" of the Detroit Pistons, "Pistol" Pete Maravich, Pete "Charlie Hustle" Rose, . These are just a few I can think of. Anyone else have any others they can think of?

Report Offensive CommentThe Steelers call OLB James Harrison "Silverback" because he resembles and angry, inhumanely strong and p*ssed off gorilla.

Report Offensive Comment70's vikes defense was "the purple people eaters". Early 70's miami D was "the no name defense" thanks to Tom Landry.

Report Offensive CommentLOl I didn't even see the Iron Curtain line right away. I'm not surprised, the amount of people that miss that is kind of sad. We're still living in the Cold War...

Report Offensive CommentSorry about the mistake on 'iron' versus 'steel.' If the Steelers shut down the opposing offenses this year though, they could name it the Iron Curtain to differentiate themselves from the '70's teams.

Report Offensive CommentBest one: Ted "Mad Stork" Hendricks (Raiders) explains how ge got his: "The University of Miami's defensive team had a middle guard on the team that was nicknamed the "Mad Dog." So he decided to nickname all the other ten players on the defensive team with the prefix "mad." Since I had skinny legs and the mascot for the University of Miami team was an ibis in the stork family, he named me the "Mad Stork."

Report Offensive CommentDon't forget about Dick "Nighttrain" Lane....he just came through out of nowhere like a train in the night! If I remember right...he knocked Giant RB Frank Gifford out of consciousness, out of the game, and out of the league for OVER A YEAR with one vicious clothesline blast!
