With free agency starting on February 27th, and with the two recent batches of releases the Broncos have made, it's finally clear the damage that Shanahan has caused and why many changes are taking place to correct those damages.
Perhaps two of the biggest losses for the Broncos comes at a high price. Shanahan pursued Travis Henry a few years back and heavily pursued Keary Colbert last offseason. Turns out that Henry and Colbert both proved to be busts, but they are still hurting our salary cap with their releases. Niko Koutivides is another player that Shanahan insisted on signed in hopes he would be starting middle linebacker, yet he never moved up the depth chart the entire season, despite losing half of our linebacker corps. to injury.
I was one of those fans who was disappointed at Shanahan's firing, but now it seems as if it's the greatest thing that ever happened to the Broncos. McDaniels and now Xanders have come in holding an axe with all the players lined up on the chopping block. They are ready and willing to do what it takes to get this team to the next level. I guarentee you it's going to get ugly for the defense, while the offense looks like it should be in great shape for next season.
I'm hoping we can sign some great free agents (as there are many on defense this year) to at least give us a fighting chance this season. But given the shape of our defense, it could be a few years until we're in playoff contention.
