Wednesday Night at Utah turned out to be one of the most competitive basketball game matches in the Western Conference thus far between the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz. Last Season, the Utah Jazz series for the Lakers was a very hard fought series to win and advance in the West. The Home team gets the "W" 113-109 in an exciting game. What I liked about it was the work the Two Lakers Sports Broadcasters did doing play by play and color for the Lakers as the Lakers almost came back to win. That was not so as the Jazz out perform the Lakers the game before the All Star break, and it was a good game before mid season for both teams. Both teams players on both ends gave 100%, and this I thought was the best played games by another team against the Lakers this season.
The work Joel Meyers and Stu Lanze do to give the Lakers fans what they want is appreciated. I liked the commentary of Pro Lakers always and in this post I will add quotes from the channel 9 KCAL broadcast. I appreciate the work you do along with Producer J Ireland for the Los Angeles Lakers and I liked the broadcast for the Lakers/Jazz game although the Lakers not getting the "W".
The Jazz outscore the Lakers 31-29 in the 1st quarter while the Lakers outscore the Jazz 34-30 in the 2nd quarter as the Lakers go into halftime with a 2 point lead 63-61. The second half is when and where the basketball game excelled, and it was back and forth at times. The Lakers need to play better in order to win road games against strong teams like the Jazz, and the Jazz took it to them. I liked the style of basketball the Jazz played versus the Lakers Wednesday Night and thought it was one of their best regular season games. In my opinion these are the two best teams in the Western Conference. From the onset of the second half the Jazz players were all over the basketball court sharing the basketball and making transition hoops from Lakers turnovers and also beating the Lakers in the half court game from all areas of the key. I couldn't believe it and at the 3:28 marker in the 3rd quarter the Lakers were trailing 75-73 after Kobe's steal for 2 the other way.
Then, Introducing the Star of the Show Wednesday Night Daren Williams coming into the game averaging over 19 points a game goes one on one with Lakers defenders and scores some very impressive hoops having a field day in that juncture late in the 3rd. D Williams scores on a 3 point play for his 19th point to give the Jazz a 78-73 lead putting pressure on the Lakers. On the other end, the Lakers take a bad FG and Daren Williams comes right back and scores again for his 21st. James: "Daren Williams really putting on a Show" as he scores on a fade away and the way he picks his spots", and the Jazz lead 80-73. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/deron_williams/index.html
For the Lakers, luckily for the UCLA Players, late in the 3rd quarter the effort and play of Jordan Farmar and Trevor Ariza helped the Lakers bounce back from those hoops and defense made by Utahs Star. "Farmar on the Run, Yes", Joel Meyers, as Jordan scores on the coast to coast play. Lamar Odom for the Lakers also played well for the Lakers late in the 3rd quarter and with the Jazz leading 85-83, and this was a close game. The pressure was on Utah although the Lakers were playing catch up. The Jazz outscore the Lakers 26-22 to lead by 2 going into the 4th.
"Daren Williams continues to light em up, that cross over dribble, that baby jumper" facing Farmar on that play as the Jazz lead by one 89-88 go up 91-88. James:"Williams just picking his spots on the floor" now with 25 points and 8 assists. With Kobe on the bench the play of Gasol comes in as Pau scores from the left side jumper bring the Lakers within one 91-90 for his 16 point going 7/12 FG's. On the other end, the Lakers give up the reverse dunk and for Utah, the play of Brewer gives the Jazz crowd energy and team momentum.
With the score 95-90 Lakers down five points it was still anybodies game at the 8:36 marker. Kobe comes into the game. Williams in this juncture leads in scoring for Utah with 27 points after he converts the FT's. The Lakers turn the ball over and on the other end for the Jazz Millsap dunks the basketball with authority. Back to back plays for the Jazz on the offensive end in the two man game where Brewer scores from the baseline on the give and go from D Williams. Josh Powell for the Lakers sits down, and some Lakers fans after that 7 point run start to smirk about Coach Jacksons benching Powell at this juncture. The largest lead of the game for the Jazz at 98-90 as Kobe comes back the other way to draw the foul and make the FT's bringing the score to 98-92 for his 30th point. Derek Fischer comes in for Farmar and Jordans 9 points and 4 assists was good basketball for the Lakers to remain competitive in this game. It is always the unsung heroes for the Lakers role player that the team needs to give that spark when the team needs defense since Bynum has been out of the line up since his injury. The Lakers Center position without Bynum is not the same, and Utah Guards were playing cat and mouse on the left baseline all second half attacking to the hoop. It was good solid hard nosed basketball that you have to give credit to that Jazz coaching staff without two of their stars perform and how they do it. Millsap comes back and draws the foul on a pump fake left baseline move, but misses both FT's and as a team Utah did not do well at the foul line at 59% at this juncture. With the score at 98-92, for the Lakers Kobe Bryant takes a bad shot I thought at 6:35 when Paul Gasol was open on the left side outside on the perimeter. Kobe misses again from the outside on a 3 point attempt.
For the Jazz, offensively it was Brewer again scoring on a spin move around dunk from the left side. On the other end, Brewer makes a spectacular play with good defense. Stu Lanze:"What a play on the spin move for the dunk, that's just 2 of his". Jazz up by 9 points. Lakers looked weak in the middle without Bynum. It's a 101-92 ball game with 5:48 from that Jazz 10-2 run. Sasha Vujacic scores his first hoop of the game with a 3 pointer from the left side to bring the Lakers within a 101-95 deficit. Coming right back for the Jazz Korver scores for 2. This game starts to become a back and forth game with the crowd into it, and the fans at home also into it. Lamar Odom scores a 3 point play from a pass from Kobe to Lamar from the foul line to give Lamar his 17 point and also having 17 rebounds and after the free throw the Lakers are down five 103-98. The Lakers play good D and on the Offensive end, Derek Fisher misses from the outside giving the Lakers a 4-17 3 point FG's ratio. Lamar Blocks Brewer "Over the Top", Joel Meyers. Stu Lanze:"You're going to have to earn this one". Brewer is then blocked by Lamar Odom and with 4:00 minutes left in the game, this was some kind of basketball game.
Williams draws the foul, and late in the game Williams fatigued at the foul line missing some FT's which game the Lakers a chance to come back in this contest. With 3:40 left in the game and Williams between free throws the KCAL 9 production team captured Sasha Vujacic combing his hair from half court, and I thought that was funny and on the one of two the score 104-98. "How am I looking?" I thought this was of the top match ups in this Western Conference this battle.
"Points in the Paint and Yes that soft touch", Joel says. Lakers have 15 points in the paint by late in the game. Kobe passes to Lamar on the same play and Okur gets called for the foul and the crowd sounds like they disagreed with that call. Tensions are rising between players. Kobe makes a good pass on that same play passing to Lamar as he drives to the foul line key 15 feet and zips it though the defense. The score 104-100 with 3:18 Joel bags on Brewers free throw abilities late in the game as Brewer misses two. Joel Meyers:"What a brick, the ball turns out of the hand,"his form",:Brewer didn't accept the challenge": At 2:58 and the score 104-100, Kobe makes to FT's for his 34th point to bring the score to 104-102. "It's Nervous Time"(ref Chick Hearn Lakers Broadcaster
Lakers have a chance to tie or take the lead with the Jazz turnover, their 15th in the game at 2:48 left in the 4th. For the Lakers, on the Offensive end, Kobe gets called for traveling as he looked like he just did the Michael Jordan shake off play from the left side against the Jazz, but doesn't shoot the ball before the refs call him for steps. James:"Same spot though".
The Lakers play good Defense under 2 minutes and with the score at 104-102 the D forces Miles to a bad shot.
"3 pointer for the lead by Kobe, he "got it" makes the three pointer jumper from the left side and the Lakers have the lead 105-104. Stu Lanze:"That guy is dangerous, that guy should be outlawed, I am surprised that the police aren't on the court. Then to the Commercial break, and the Lakers fans go into that break smiling at 1:38 and a point lead. Stu Lnaze on Kobe:"The guy is relentless", "when the game is on the line, it's a brand new mentality".
Millsap comes back on the other end and scores on a dunk, gets fouled and converts the three point play to bring the Jazz in the lead by two 107-105. Lakers come down a miss, but on the defensive end, Kobe steals the ball and takes it back for two to tie the game at 107-107, "the excitement","KOBEEEEEEEE" and on that play Korver "didn't do a very good job protecting the basketball".
The for Utah the biggest hoop comes as Okur scores on a long three pointer to bring the score 110-107. Kobe comes right back and shoots from the top of the key beyond the arc and misses. Okurs three hurt the Lakers, and at :48 "talk about making a long three pointer", ref to commentary.
At 25.1, Utah leads 111-107, and on the Williams FT miss, Fischer takes the ball from the rebound, gets fouled and makes two foul shots to bring the score 111-109, and that was a big swing for the Lakers. Williams gets fouled on the offensive end and makes 1 of 2 to bring the score 112-109. Lamar hustles for the loose ball on the second miss passes to Fischer, and Derek goes for the three and misses. Fischer gets another shot opportunity, but misses on the fall away. At 112-109, Williams is fouled again, and misses again at the free throw line the first attempt, but ices the game and makes the second FT to bring the score 113-109 at 1.8 left in the game. Okurs three was the difference late in the game for the Jazz getting that victory Wednesday Night at home. Final Score Jazz 113 Lakers 109. What a tremendous game. Joel:"The Lakers almost pulled it off". Utah outscores the Lakers 26-24 in the 4th quarter.
The Lakers have the best standing in the NBA at 42-10 going into the All Star Break the one seed in the West. The Jazz standing at 30-23, and I think are a better team than the 8th seed.
Lakers scoring: Kobe scores 37, Lamar scores 19, Gasol 16, Fischer 13, and Farmar scores 9 points. Jazz scoring: Williams scores 31, Okur 22, Miles 17, Brewer 16, Millsap with 10, and Korver and Harpring score 7 points. The Lakers go 42-90 FG's at 46.7%, while the Jazz go 41-70 at 58.6%, and that will get it done on any night. Utah seemed to be making a lot of their shots this game, and the lack of presence at the Center position, and bench play for the Lakers in the front court was a key difference in this game why the Jazz shot the ball so well.
