I watched the full video of A-Rod's defense today. While he did go into greater depth than he had with Gammons, I left with mixed emotions. Part of me wants to say, ok. I'll judge you from here on out. But does that mean we throw away your prior stats, particularly 2001-2003? A-Rod seems to be bright, articulate and arguably likeable, yet there is an element of insincerity that creeps through every so often. When asked about the PED's he was taking today at first he said he wasn't sure if it had an effect on his performance or not but he then admitted that he did feel it gave him more energy. That was the one and only time he admitted that. In later questions he said he didn't know if he benefited from it or not. How can anyone in their right mind believe he continued to allow himself to be frequently injected with a substance he admitted wasn't Tic Tacs for so many years if he wasn't sure he was benefitting from it?
In my previous blog I said that as far as I'm concerned any HR records set now are meaningless. They are like exhibition records to me as well as those who are die-hard fans and purists. In our minds we throw out the steroid abusers from the All - Time and single season HR record Books. To the purists it's still Hank Aaron & Roger Maris respectively.
While part of me feels A-Rod is being scapegoated here as these results were supposed to be anonymous the other part says it comes with the territory for being the highest paid player in the sport who professed to be clean. And for someone who is from all accounts a fan of the game and it's history - Yes....what he did was dumb. But then again we all are guilty of doing dumb things at one point or another in our lives . It's part of being human.
