How a team goes 0-16 in a season is beyond me. Maybe in early years when there wasnt FA and loads of talent in the college ranks. In the day when any given team can go from worst to first there is hope for the lions. But lets go back and see where this all started. As a kid i remember the likes of Scott Mitchell and the hook ups he had with Herman Moore and Brett Perriman. In that era they the great Barry Sanders who nobody will ever forget. From there on they havent had a corner stone of any kind. They have wiffed on FA and the draft. i stood by Matt Millen thinking theres no way a ex football player could be as stupid as people made him out to be. sure as **** he really was. Drafting 3 WR's straight just doesnt cut it. Harrington?? come on the list goes on for this team. with a new regime in place and hopefully smart people running the show the Lions have a chance to do the impossible and thats actually make a run at the playoffs. as of this writting the lions have signed Maurice Morris (great change of pace back to Smith) signed Eric King (good scrappy corner) and traded for Anthony Henry (safety/corner) whos is solid. No they wherent the big splashes like a Haynesworth or a Lewis, but they where a step in the right direction. To build a franchise from the bottom up like the lions need to do, u first need to pick a side to focus on. great offense/ lousy Defenses dont win games, check the falcons in the 90's and the broncos last year. lousy offense/great defenses do win, check the ravens SB run and the bears in the 80's. so the logical side to pic is the defense. Then u have to pick a scheme. all schemes work well if u have the right people and they understand it. they have personal to run a 4-3 so i say stick with it. they have a cornerstone in Ernie Sims so there good in that respect. From what i hear hes a great leader and someone the younger guys can look up 2. someone else they need to find and it would reallyhelp is a qb for there secondary. Brian Dawkins is off the market now but they need to find that kinda person.

Im not saying fixing the Lions would be easy but they really need to find a direction and stick to it. All these mock drafts have them taking a Sanchez or a Stafford and i think its just stupid. I hope they learned from the mistake they made with Harrington. They need to trade out of the 1st pick if at all possible, short of that they need to find a safe pick like say Curry or a Monroe type player with there first choice and someone like a B.j Raji or a Brian Orakpo with there second pick. They need to find players this year which fit a foundation. Next year maybe...maybe next year they can start thinking about finding a franchise qb but i still think there a few more years away. Intill then they need to focus on bringing players that want to play and want to help turn this franchise around.

Good thoughts.

I agree that the Lions do not need the #1 pick - at this point they need as many picks as they can get, not necessarily one up at the top.

i know the top pick is suppose to help lousy teams, but really teams that annually pick that low like say the Raiders, Lions, and the Browns there problems run deeper than just talent. Giving the Lions new Managment the benefit of the doubt, i think they will do the right thing and be smart with picks this year.

I think that the #1 pick if used correctly has value. Drafting a qb would help them a lot. None of the qbs on their roster are long term solutions. They also could use a solid dt since they traded away Shaun Rodgers. The Lions have plenty of picks after robbing the Cowboys so they should net something of interest.
