I'm a sports fanatic, but I'm also a history buff, so I'm starting off this new blog with a bit of sports history:
On April 15, 1989, 96 soccer fans were crushed to death in Sheffield during the Liverpool-Nottingham Forest FA Cup semifinal. The accident occurred because a number of fans had not made it into the grounds by the start of the match so they were allowed into an already overcrowded section of terracing.
The story is making headlines now because Liverpool's then manager, Kenny Dalglish, has finally broken his silence about the tragedy. He allows that the tragedy might very well have been prevented if the start of the match had simply been delayed.
