Now that the anticipated trade deadline day is over, there's nothing to do now but try to make sense of some of the deals that happened, or didn't, today.

1) I wasn't overly surprised not to see Bouwmeester moved but Vancouver was in til the end. He would've looked good on that blue line but, guess Martin is going to wait til the summer to either sign him or see him walk for nothing.

2) The Flames made two moves..., acquiring Leopold from Colorado and Jokinen from Phoenix. I like the Jokinen move to a point..., he'll be a force on that loaded Flames team for the playoffs and it may just be enough for the Flames to win the West. I still think Detroit wins the West but now, the Flames are solid contenders.

3) Phoenix made some good moves..., getting Upshall, Kalinen, Prucha and Dawes in seperate deals. They lost Morris and Carcillo but these players make up for those losses, Morris wasn't going to play in the desert again anyway and now he's Broadway's problem.

4) Nik Antropov will now call MSG home, having been dealt to the Rangers for 2 draft picks, Dominic Moore moves to Buffalo for a 2nd rounder and their goaltending got a bit of a shock..., they picked Gerber on waivers and got Kolzig out of TB, along with Heward and Rogers for Petiot. Kind of suprised that the Leafs went for goaltending but with Tosk out for the year, I kind of figured the Leafs would go that route. A lot of Leafs fans will complain that Burke got nothing back but, 4 total draft picks, two goalies and 2 D-men aren't what I'd call nothing at this point.

5) The move I liked today was Boston getting Recchi..., he's going to add scoring up front (as if they really need it!) and he's still a tough player to play against. The Bruins lost Nokelainen but they gained Montador, a steady D-man who can fill in some minutes on the back end.

6) The Pens made a couple of moves..., picking up Guerin, Craig Adams and Andy Wozinewski. I thought they'd go after Recchi but Guerin is still a good fit for this club. He can add some toughness and experience as the Pens head to the playoffs.

7)Carolina reacquiring Erik Cole from the Oilers for Patrick O'Sullivan in a three team deal was a good move for the Canes. They're fighting for 8th right now and with the 'fan favorite' back in Raleigh, they could move up. Buffalo lost Kotalik to the Oilers in that deal and the Oilers picked up O'Sullivan from the Kings, making them a contender in the West as far as I am concerned. The Oil have a good young team and in the wild west, anything can happen.

8) Philadelphia came up empty on the Morris and Bouwmeester front and only picked up McLaren from SJ for a 6th rounder. Nice work Philly..., get a guy 7 years past his best and hope that he can do something on your blueline.

9) I have never been a Rangers fan..., never will be but with the acquisitions of Antropov and Morris, they should be contending this year. Morris was a cancer in that Coyotes dressing room and had to be moved, and Antropov gives the Rangers some size and scoring up front. Question is, will he be comfortable playing on the wing, as they have Gomez and Drury? And why did this team gives up on Dawes? I liked this guy on this team! He had 10 goals, played a regular shift and he was one of the better players the first part of the year? But now he gets a chance to play for #99 and that should be enough for him and the other Rangers traded there, to play up to their abilities and contend next season.

10) All in all, it wasn't a bad trade deadline overall. Some of the bigger players weren't moved, some were and there were a few surprise moves. Phoenix and Calgary clearly won today with their moves, Philadelphia, Vancouver lost and everyone else just did what they needed to to compete. Let's see how the rest of the year pans out and see who really won the 'deadline sweepstakes'.
