I must admit I was never an Alex Ovechkin fan.. that is until I saw him play. I was more of a Malkin fan but the shear joy and passion that Ovechkin plays with is addictive. The way he gives everything he has to make a hit, the way he jumps for joy like he won the lottery after he scores a goal. Man that is something to watch... something I want to watch over and over again even though he plays for the most boring team in the NHL. Honestly can their be a worse starting name for a sports franchise than Washington? Yawn..snore..snore...
To me the fan the value of Ovechkin is obvious. In this day of tough economic times. With the NBA having Lebron, Wade and Kobe. The NFL being the NFL and baseball having the Yankees...it would only seem logical that the NHL and those who love the NHL would embrace the only guy who has the charistma to sell the game in the US and that is Ovechkin. Love Crosby all you want he still can't hold Ovechkins jock strap when it comes to pure entertainment. Anyone who watched last years playoffs knows Crosby doesn't deliver hits he takes them. He is a good player but he is also sometimes a very boring player to watch. He isn't even the best player on his team.
Problem is Crosby is Canadian and Ovechkin is Russian. No matter what the media says they still will do more to promote a Canadian over a Russion which is the only reason people are not jumping all over Crosbies and Cherries comments over Ovechkin celbrating.
I know this post is disjointed because I don't know how to segway into my point and that is to all NHL fans, if you want your game to be popular, Ovechkin is the money player. He will bring fans to the arena. You need him to never change...and Crosby and Cherry if you love the game and had a clue you would realize this. Not everyone loves the boring NHL..some of us love pizzazz...
