Lakers/Spurs Thursday Night NBA

03/13/09 12:42:14 am b2evolution Lakers/Spurs Thursday Night NBA  Kobe on Jupiter http://jamestownjupiter.com/

The Los Angeles Lakers go into San Antonio to play the Spurs for an opportunity to clinch/win the Pacific Division and do Lakers win 102-95. Coming off the Win versus Houston, the Lakers showed great poise throughout this game against a very worthy opponent. The Game was said to be ???a Playoff Atmosphere" and these two teams are very familiar with one another. It was a good basketball game. The Spurs played tough in spurts. The Lakers played good defense especially in the first 12 minutes of the game. The Lakers seemed to have the momentum most of the game playing Lakers Basketball playing team defense and converting on the Offensive end. The Lakers playing outstanding in the first quarter outscore the Spurs 35-17. The Spurs in the second quarter outscore the Lakers 21-18. The Lakers lead at the half 53-38. 3rd Quarter the Spurs outscore the Lakers by seven 32-25. The Spurs Michael Finley had a strong game for the Spurs scoring 25 points his season high and most since March 2005. The Spurs put some spurts together one of 14-4 and the other 8-0. The Lakers were able in insert bench players to provide minutes for the team score 24 points for the Lakers to the Spurs 19. Both teams seemed to be just feeling each other out knowing that the playoffs are just around the corner.

I was able to listen to the Houston game last night on 570am Radio Los Angeles/Orange Counties and watched a glimpse of the game on KCAL 9 when the game was already under 10 seconds and Kobe at the foul line sealing the win. I thought it was important to come off that Portland game and win at Houston. But to then come in San Antonio looking fresh like that going for 2/3 in the road series getting defeated in 2 other road games where the Lakers didn???t play that well at Denver looked confident Thursday Night against the Spurs.
Some 4th Quarter play by play for the Los Angeles Lakers at 7:18 in the game, the Lakers go up 12 points scoring 8-0 unanswered to bring the score at 89-77. Luke Walton scores on a lay up on the left side on the pass from Pau Gasol. Tim Duncan draws the foul on the other end and scores on two free throws to bring the Spurs within 10 points at 89-79.
Kobe and Fischer come back into the ball game. Josh Powell misses on the attempt, and the Pro Lakers Announcers talked about the players effort being needed this game. Kurt Thomas for the Spurs scores on the outside shot about 18 feet swish left wing to bring the Spurs at 89-81 with 6:30. Kobe Bryant scores on the next possession his 20th point to keep the Lakers up ten 91-81. The Spurs Toni Parker scores next on ???an Uncontested Lay up??? 91-83. This game at this juncture was a back and forth game as Luke Walton scores his 6th point to bring the score at 93-83 at 5:43. Kobe Bryant scores the next hoop for the Lakers on a nice play goes around Gasol putting the screen/pick. And for the Lakers on the defensive end, the Spurs get called for an illegal screen. Lakers looked good by the mid 4th quarter considering that the team played two good teams on the road. Houston is the third seed in the West while San Antonio the second. The Lakers bench play was good scoring 22 at this point and Josh Powell makes a key hoop for a momentum swing on a put back from his miss. The Lakers bench were averaging 17.5 points in this road trip so that was good for the team to have players come off the bench and provide points and minutes. Sasha Vujacic scored 6 points.
After the break, the Spurs gained momentum as Lamar Odom goes up for a dunk and challenges Tim Duncan (donuts) and Duncan stuffs Odom hard on that play. The teams exchange misses as Kobe misses, Duncan misses, Kobe again on the other end misses and at under 5:00 Michael Finley breaks the poor shooting that spurt making a three pointer for this 25th point to bring the Spurs within seven 93-86. ???Finley???s Night??? Joel Meyers says, and he was right on that play. The Spurs score out of nowhere with Parker scoring at the 3:30 mark to bring the Spurs within five 93-88.
Then came the Lakers, and the play the Lakers fans were all waiting for that burst of speed for the Dunk and it came when Kobe passes to Gasol and Pau scores on the dunk at 3:03 the score 95-88. Spurs come right back with Duncan making a pass to Kurt Thomas on the uncontested jumper is converted 95-90 at 2:45. Thomas played a good game for the Spurs. ???Both teams responding down the stretch??? ref Lakers broadcasters said. Kobe misses his third outside shot in a row by possessions and here comes Toni Parker for THREE, and he scores:???Lookout??? said Joel. It is down to a Two point game 95-93, and what a game for the Spurs fans to watch and be apart of. You can always count on the Spurs giving that 100% especially against the Los Angeles Lakers and likewise. At 2:18 Stu Lanze mentions that the Lakers were up by 10 points just a minute ago.
The Big Hoop for the Lakers comes next play as Kobe first draws a foul to force Mason out of the game with his 5th foul brings in Hill guarding Kobe on the next play from in bounce: KOBEEEEE for 3 left side over Hill, and it is good, Lakers go up 98-93, and that was a back breaker for the Spurs in my opinion. The Spurs at the 3 point line were 11/16. Duncan comes right back playing hard all game to bring the Spurs within three points at 98-95. Lakers come back with a sweet hoop next with Lamar making a nice pass in the lane for the reverse Gasol scores to bring the Lakers up five 100-95 at 1:15. Lakers on defense come up with a jump ball opportunity as Lamar Odom got his hand on the ball which forced the jump where the Lakers get the tap. Lakers unable to convert on that tap, but do hold the Spurs on defense as the Lakers press the Spurs and force the pressure in the half court and Finley misses which sealed the game. As Joel said ???The Lakers are in the driver???s seat???. Sasha makes two FT???s but Lamar Odom misses two at 19.7. The Lakers win 102-95 and with this win get the Number 1 seed in the Western Conference and the Pacific Division title.
In the stands a fan having a Kobe #24 MVP banner, the Lakers Kobe Bryant scores 23 points with 6 assists and 4 rebounds, Pau Gasol 23 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists, Lamar Odom 12 points and 10 rebounds, Fischer with 10 points and Ariza scores 10. The Lakers go 43-83 FG???s at 51.8%.
For the Spurs, Finley scores 25, Parker 25, Duncan 16, Thomas 8 points. The Spurs go 38-73 at 52% and at 3 point FG???s the Spurs go 11-17 64.7%. Lakers go 12-15 at 80% from the foul line while the Spurs go 8-16 at 50%. There were 2 lead changes and 4 times this game was even. Spurs outscore the Lakers by one 25-24 in the 4th. Lakers win 102-95 play Dallas Sunday. Lakers maintained their poise. The Lakers made big plays and hoops down the stretch. Pau Gasol gets the post Game Interview. Of course John Ireland asked him about the Portland Game.
The Lakers are 23-9 on the road with the best standing in the NBA at 52-13.
