Round 1 of the 2009 NCAA Tournament has closed and it is time to reflect on what has happened. First in a year with less upsets congrats to Cleveland State, Wisconsin, WKY and Dayton. Well done. Honorary mention for Cal Stat North and East Tenn State for giving us something to talk about and cheer on well at least for 35 of 40 minutes.

CONFERENCES: The rub

Okay all I heard about was how good ACC and Big 10 basketball. That they were so deserving and even PSU or Vtech should also have been included -- i.e. Arizona or Tex AM did not deserve to go. That the Big 12 (and Pac10) were undeserving. So lets look at the results- it shows why CONFERENCE RPI is a joke. Because if a conference is over-hyped then playing each other in it increases your RPI. 

Big 12: 6-0 (only undefeated plus top 3 dominated)

Big East: 6-1 (no surprises here)

Pac 10: 5-1

Big 10: 4-3 (you better thank the ACC or you would only have 2 victories)

ACC: 3-4

SEC: 1-2 (go play some flag football)

So the hype is done and the superior play of WF, FSU, Clemson, and Boston College went down. Not to mention the Big 10 was only saved by the fact of there ACC opponents losing. Arizona proved they deserved to be there with a beat down of UTAH (so enough SDSU backers -- your 1st place MWC team went down to Arizona you finished 4th) I would also note Tex AM controlled BYU the 2nd place MWC team (co-champ reg season).

I saw Texas control Minnesota (hush Big 10 hush). Mizzou, OU, and Kansas win by double digits and domination. Ok State win perhaps one of the best games so far with Tenn.

So as the dance continues it is time to remember that besides the obviously best Big East it was the BIG 12 and Pac 10 that are true contender conferences as a whole and the ACC and Big 10 are the pretenders. Okay the ACC is a pretender and the Big 10 was over evaluated to get 7 teams
