W. Parker 29 4,989 13,366
A. Peterson 24 3,101 15,254
James isn't gonna catch him. He is coming off a sub 1,000 yard season. LT averaged just 3.8 per carry this season. Both these guys have hit the wall. Both are 30+ and they are starting to feel the wear and tear. Portis had a nice year but his average is dropping and at 28, he is barely over half way to Emmitt. What Smith did is nothing short of incredible. There are some young impressive backs in the league but can their body handle the test of time? Peterson had a history of injuries in college. Parker entered the league late and is already 29. Jackson had a terrible year in 07. The 18,355 mark will never be broken. All the other players closer to Smith are retired.
The great Emmitt Smith came onto the scene in 1990 from the Florida Gators. He showed in his first season with Americas' Team that he was special. Everyone said he was too small. the scouts couldn't get a tape measure inside his chest to measure his heart. Emmitt was tackled 5,319 times in his career. Emmitt added 1,586 yards rushing in 17 playoff games averaging 4.5 per carry. The 1,586 yards in the playoffs is an NFL RECORD. His 4.1 per carry in his career was hurt by his longevity. He was the ultimate workhorse. He holds the NFL RECORD for Rushng TDs in a career. Emmitt had an incredible 164 TDs. rushing. Smith added another 21 TDs in playoff competition. Tomlinson is 38 TDs from that mark with 126. I don't believe he'll catch him. LT has hit the wall that 30 year old backs do. Emmitt Smith had 23,507 yards in his career including playoffs, rushing and receiving. Emmitt Smith is a legend. His record will never go down. He was an incredible back that most fans wish never existed. He wore the blue star and he epitomized the greatness of the Dallas Cowboys.
