The Blues continued their unlikely quest for a playoff spot, knocking off Calgary 3-2 Friday night with a 2 goal 3rd period comeback. The Note now sits just 2 points out of the final playoff spot, with ten games to play. There are 6 teams with between 74 and 79 points.....all vying for the last 2 playoff spots, so it is a tough road ahead. The Blues have a critical three game homestand this week, with games against LA, Vancouver and Columbus. The Blues will close out with 6 of 7 on the road, so these next three are mission critical.
Regardless of how this pans out, the Blues have made a nice run in the second half to even get themselves back in this spot. This team once sat 14-21-3, and certainly looked to be also-rans for 2008-2009. Since then, the Blues have played great, pretty consistent hockey, going 19-9-6 in the last 34. Quite a turnaround, and the really inspiring part is that it has mostly come on the backs of the young kids such as David Perron, David Backes, Patrik Berglund and TJ Oshie.
I wrote in this space during the pre-season that I thought the Blues could be in the mix for one of those last spots. I even wrote that before Erik Johnson suffered his season ending knee injury. The development of the young kids has exceeded my expectations, and playoffs or not this year, the Blues are well positioned for next year and beyond.
