About once a year Formula One has an actually interesting race, usually in Australia. This year was no different. The opening Grand Prix was one of the most bizarre races I have seen in a long time. The opening grid looked like someone had taken all the drivers names, put them in a hat & did a lottery to determine starting order. I mean the pole sitter was Jenson Button (Jenson Button?). Not only that, but he led the entire race. Meanwhile the real guys were back in the pack, Hamilton, Alonso, Raikkonen, Massa.
This looked like one of those Neckcar crash fests with the supposed best drivers in the world doing some really stupid moves. Cars flying off the course into gravel pits, tight passes that could have ended in disaster, & at the end the 2nd & 3rd place cars pulling a not-paying-attention Marty Roth/Tomas Scheckter like move that put both of them out of the race with only a few laps left. What were they thinking?
There have been a lot of rule changes this year that have affected the series, & the result was the positioning on the grid, & probably helped create more passing which is always good, except of course up front. That hasn't changed. I like to say it's called Formula One because who ever is in the lead at the first turn of the first lap wins the race. Unfortunately, that's the case 99.99% of the time. I mean Button didn't even lose the lead when he pitted for fuel & tires. C'mon now!
Anyway Indy Car starts next Sunday, & we will see how their season goes. The economy has limited the field, but Versus will give them better coverage than ESPN 2, although I have no idea who the announcers are. Speeds F1 crew is great. Obviously I have no interest in redneck taxicabs playing bumper cars for 5 hours. I prefer open wheel, much more skill, much more exciting.
