The Cutler saga is over...at least for now. The Redskin's frenzied efforts to put together a deal for Denver QB Jay Cutler did not come to fruition and Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears today for QB Kyle Orton, two first-rounders, and a 3rd/5th round swap. The hefty price paid by the Bears indicates that they were serious about finally featuring an elite passer, something that hasn't been so in the Windy City for a long time. It will be interesting to monitor the aftershocks of Snyder and Co.'s open efforts at jettisoning current starting QB Jason Campbell in favor of Cutler. Campbell has thus far exhibited a calm, steady and decidedly drama-free demeanor in his short career, and while he probably won't outwardly show that he has been affected by the Cutler affair, only time will show whether his pysche has been rattled. The 'Skins better hope that Campbell will use this experience, along with the fact that he is in a contract year, to be more motivated than ever and finally realize the potential that the great Joe Gibbs perceived when he traded up to get him. As for Cutler, he has always expressed a strong desire to play under center for the Bears, and this obviously was a factor in the trade. However, Cutler will have to deal with a conspicuous downgrade in his downfield targets; going from throwing to Marshall, Royal, Stokley and Scheffler to old man Marty Booker, the perpetually underachieving B-Lloyd, and Devin Hester, who although scary-quick, is a converted defensive back with questionable route-running and hands. Perhaps the Bears will use one of their remaining picks to expand Cutler's vertical arsenal. Back in D.C., expect Campbell's high-character reputation to shine as he digests the 'Skin's flirtation with Cutler. He and coach Jim Zorn have already huddled together and the results seem positive, they spoke after practice today and Campbell left the conversation saying that "it meant a lot" to him that Zorn had been supportive, stating that "they are in this thing together." Perhaps the 'Skins will be better off after all as Campbell will finally be able to play in the same system for more than one season, and will be fighting to secure his job as the 'Skin's field general beyond the '09 season. One would hope that Snyder & Cerrato didn't consciously bank on Campbell's nice-guy reputation when deciding to make an offer for Cutler, gambling that Campbell would take the disappointing snub in stride. Though we can't know for sure, I wouldn't put it past 'em. So far, it seems that The Dan & Cousin Vinny have sidestepped a controversy, and will escape unscathed despite their failed (and arguably questionable) efforts.

I think it's pretty funny how all this fuss is being made over a mediocre at best quaterback.
He has never won a really important game. He's the reason Shanahan was fired.
Drew Brees put up better numbers, and I remember Dan Marino was good with the stats.
Give me the "W" every time. Especially when it counts.

This is a good sign for the Skins. But Snyder has no clue as to what an organization is or how to run one. It is a blessing that this has worked in his favor. And Jay could take a lesson from this as a professional. Campbell will benefit from this experience.

Your are right perfectpats, Snyder could learn a thing or two from likes of Rooney, Kraft, and Polian.

Campbell would be a fool to let this impact him on the field. If he wants to be a long-term starting QB in the NFL, and make mucho millions of dollars along the way, then NOW is the time for him to step up and show that he is that kind of QB.
A poor 2009 combined with public whining about his situation, could leave him forever in a backup role.
