It has finally happened.

I just read an article about Jay Cutler being traded to the Bears. I don't know who the author is, or I'd give him credit for it here. But, it appears on NFL on S.I.com, so I'm sure it's been read many times over. I won't go into any detail about it either, as you can read it for yourself, and I don't need to make this any longer than needed.

Everybody and their brother will have their opinion about what transpired after weeks of drama between Cutler, McDaniels, and the Denver Broncos. I'm not a fan of any, but I do like the team, and respect them and their fans. As will most, I also have my opinion, although it's not any hair off of my back what they did or didn't do, or whether or not it was the "right thing".

As far back as I can remember, John Elway may or may not have been the first to refuse to play for a team or a coach.  He was initially drafted by the Colts, and he said he'd rather play baseball than play for them. His right to do that, as he wasn't under any contract.  Things worked out, and he became a great QB for the Broncos. I was happy for him when he won his first SB, even tho I was always an NFC guy. Sorry Packers, and fans, but you got yours the year before. Hard to believe it's been 10 years already since Elway and Co. beat the Pack.

Then, we had Eli Manning refusing to play for the Chargers. Again, he wasn't under any contract and he and Phillip Rivers ended up swapping teams.  As long as all involved were happy, I see no problem with both instances, but then I'm not behind closed doors of these teams either. All I can go by is what I read and hear. It appears to have worked out.

Now, we have a 48 million dollar QB who got upset by an incoming coach and is halfway through his contract, and he demands to be traded. Without conjuring up all that has happened between then and now, and regardless of who is right, or who is wrong, this is what I would have done.

Had I been Pat Bowlen I would have tried talking to him, which he did,  and when that failed, and it did,  then I would make him report to camp when the time came, or be fined. He is, after all, still under contract. What's he going to do? If he chose not to report to camp, then go on with plans anyway. Let him stand on the sidelines, or do as the Titans did with McNair...ban him from the practice field, til he decided to sit down and talk. He sure wasn't going to play for anyone else. McNair's situation was different, but he was banned nevertheless.

I'm sure the Broncos would find a QB, if not Simms, who would be serviceable. What do you have to lose? A few ballgames? How do you know you'd lose those games before they're played? If Cutler did finally report to camp, he'd have to compete for his job again. But, if it was me, he'd ride the bench for awhile. Holding the team hostage, if you will, may set a precedent that may never be rectified. If Cutler gets away with it, then someone else will be thinking the same thing eventually.

The Bengals may not be the most liked or best team out there, but when their coach refused to give in to Chad Ocho Me Go Go to another team O, I respect him for standing his ground. Dude was under contract too, and he either had to play or be fined.  Why didn't Bowlen and McDaniels do that with Cutler? I bet you Cutler would have eventually come around. 48 million dollars........Wish I could have made that kind of money in the Navy.

I could sit here and call Cutler a spoiled, rich, professional brat, or things along those lines, but it wouldn't solve anything. What they did, I guess, was what they thought best, but I have my doubts about it.

Some of you may think that, since I'm a Cowboy fan, what business do I have commenting on something that don't concern me?  I'm not just a Cowboy fan........I am also a fan of professional football in that I enjoy watching all of the teams play. Yes, I watch the Lions every Thanksgiving too. The game is what it's all about, and if things like this keeps happening, what's going to happen to the game?

Who is the real winner here?

The Broncos. Cutler won't have the receivers, he won't have the o-line. He didn't do it by himself last season. I think he'll be good in Chicago, but two first rounders and a third, and a (ahem) QB? Thats quite a bit. I'm a Bronco fan and I'm smiling.

April 2, 2009  10:33 PM ET

The real winner is the bears. The draft, no matter where you are drafting, is a crapshoot. Maybe Sanchez is the next Akili Smith, which is a lot more likely than him being the next Carson Palmer. Maybe they get a servicable defensive tackle with the other number two. WHO CARES??? Jay Cutler is a gunslinging difference maker. He was 13 and 1 when his defensive allowed 21 point (the nfl average) or less. He may be a little bit of a prima donna, but name a star who isnt. This guy could be going the pro bowl for the next ten years because he is an athlete with a gun for an arm, who can take the heat and is smart. He went to Vanderbilt, the doorstop of SEC football, and was the player of the year when he was a senior. I lived and died orange and blue for a lot of years and I am glad my colors don't have to change that much. Also I say #%$@ McDumb@%$!!

April 2, 2009  10:36 PM ET

I do think he'll make the Bears a much better team though, maybe even championship caliber. They've already got the D. Devin Hester could even emerge as true deep threat. Who knows, maybe I'll be singing a different tune a year from now. I just hope the Broncos use those picks on the D.

Glad to be rid of such a weak fan.

Listen, I am a Broncos fan but I grew up near Chicago. My dad is a huge Bears fan. Bears fans are loving this right now because Cutler gives the Bears a great quarterback that they haven't had in years. The Broncos are the biggest losers because now we are basically the Bears. So what if we have receivers and an offensive line. Without someone behind center they're worthless, and now we don't have ANY good options at quarterback and probably won't for the next five years.

It's hard to come by a good quarterback these days. They are very rare and we were very lucky to get Cutler in '06, now McDaniels has screwed that up. The Broncos went from mediocre to terrible in the period of two weeks and I am not happy. I've seen Kyle Orton, he's terrible. We might as well just release him. Who cares if we got a couple first round picks. Great. We can spend them on defensive players. But who cares if they're any good because McDaniels will just piss them off too and they'll be gone next year.

I'm done with the Broncos and I wash my hands clean of this whole situation. I am totally disappointed our new "coach", our pathetic excuse for an owner, and in my eyes we don't even have a GM.

Great work Broncos. You have just tarnished one of the last remaining respectable franchises in this league.

Shawn, don't be giving up on your team just yet. Kyle Orton may have just needed a change of scenery. The Cowboys went through several QB's between Aikman and Romo, and none were worth paying attention to, much less paying a salary. The jury is still out on Romo, but I like his potential, and being an undrafted free agent, he's a lot better than the ones before him, some of who were drafted. So, you never know what you have until you seen him work in the system that's there. He's still young too. I've watched Orton play as I have Grossman. I like Orton a lot better.
It's okay to be disappointed in what your team does......I've been disappointed with the Cowboys for the past 13 years, but I continue to hope, and after 40 years plus of watching them, why give up now?
It could be the best thing that happened since Elway. Who's to say Cutler wouldn't have caused a rift between all the players if he had stayed? It could be he would have been resentful to the point to where it could have been a circus, such as what happened last year to my team with The Oral One (T.O.). So, just hang in there and see what happens.

Did you know that Shanahan offered Romo more money to sign with the Broncos than the Cowboys did? Would you have settled for Romo if he would have signed there? Interesting question.

Shawno85 & Formerbronco it's fake fans like you two that show no loyalty. SAME AS CUTLER!!!! He acted like he didn't want to be traded. THAT WAS A LIE!!! Yeah McDaniels messed up, but Cutler let Bus' ted Cook get in his head. If it was for the money, he should have said that. McDaniels did regret what he did, but Cutler acted like he had his panties in a bunch. LIKE YOU TWO!!!! WIZZIE GLOVA!!!!!

Bottom line here is the jury is out on who wins...

If Cutler goes on to help the Bears win a SuperBowl in the next 2-3 seasons, then the price tag was worth it.

But anything short of that accolade means Denver did well.

Cutler was dealt for 2 Round 1 picks and a Round 3....those are some solid draft picks given up there. In essence, the Broncs, if they draft well, could net 3 starters for 1.

Now, they have obviously lost a starter at the most important spot on the field, but lets face it...the Broncs are going no where quick.

With a new coach and staff coming in, they are in rebuild mode..period.

The Bears on the other hand, gave up the farm and while Bears fans are happy, it doesn't mean squat when he has no legit #1 wr to toss the ball too.

Olsen is a decent TE but not spectacular. Hester is nothing but a fast guy...would love to see him go over the middle on a crossing route....lol...and everyone else the Bears have at WR are a bunch of #3's playing on a team lacking a true #1.

The Bears still have work to do, but it was a move in the right direction...my argument is that by the time they get the other pieces in place, it will be time to revamp the aging D.

Good points, Jeff.

At the time I wrote this, all I knew was that Cutler had been traded to the Bears. I knew nothing of what they got for him, or anything else. I do now, of course.

In my humblest opinion, I think the Broncos made a steal, although I mentioned what I would have done with him first.

Chances are, Cutler may do the same thing to the Bears eventually, or something similar. He may very well be an outstanding athlete, but so was Terrell Owens. Owens wasn't cut because of his abilities. He was a disruption, regardless of what Jerry Jones, or anyone else says.
Granted, Cutler didn't start this, but he could have been more open minded about communication and ironing things out. If he stayed offended because of a "mistake" one man made, then, chances are, if he gets offended again later on, he'll do the same thing.

Time will tell how things go. But, I wouldn't trade Romo for Cutler, heads up, or otherwise. But, that's me. Good luck, Bronco fans. You too Chicago.

Cutler for 48 million dollars, are you kidding me????? Hes not worth half that money so what if he had a decent year stats wise last year but, still a loser to San Diego who kicked the crap out of him. His QB record overall is a losing record games lost to wins so where are you folks getting your logic from??? He could have taken the Broncos to the playoffs in the last game of the season and he failed. So where is this great QB stuff all about. I think Cutler and his **** agent should just go away and continue to pull this crap on another dumb team, he is no better than T.O from Dallas. Oh excuse me T.O cut from Dallas who is now looking for a new home. Cutler, cut me some slack, doghead!!!

What logic are you referring to? Everything I've said is conjectures and suppositions.

You're a day late and a dollar short, Chuck. Cutler is now a Bear, and Owens signed with the Bills several days ago.

Shirt....I am with you too.... Romo for Cutler = bad move and salary cap hell...

If this were fantasy football or Madden I still would not trade Tony for Jay...

As a Boys fan, Tony is my guy and I think he will continue to put up similar #s....we just need to start getting those playoff wins.

As JeffHart24 says, the best evaluation of this trade will come years down the road. However, that usually doesn't stop most of us from early opinions on a trade. For my money, I think Denver comes out ahead.

More than a few people are saying Cutler was overrated, he couldn't win the big ones, look at his overall won-loss record. While its true that Denver's shocking collapse down the stretch last year did little to build a clutch reputation for Cutler, there is no way he shoulders all of the blame for that. The Broncos offense was great while the defense continually let the team down. ESPN was displaying a stat that Cutler has lost only once when the Denver defense held the opposition to 21 points or less. He is a good, possibly a very good QB.

However, the Bears handed over 2 1st rounders and 1 third. I'm a Pittsburgh fan (I hear boos, for some reason), and have a high opinion of the value of these picks. Denver is going to have two 1st rounders this year (the Chicago pick plus Denver's own 1st rounder) with two more next year. This is quite a haul for Denver, which needs to fill numerous holes in its defense. Maybe its a close call, but I think Denver came out ahead here, especially given the fact that Denver had lost a lot of leverage when it became so clear that retaining Cutler was no longer an option. All in all, I'm pretty amazed that Denver was able to get so much in return for Cutler.

Agreed. I think those playoff wins will come in time. But, fans have to be patient, and quit bellyaching when he makes a mistake. Even Roger and Troy had growing pains.

Agree here as well. Denver did hit the jackpot. But, Cutler is similar to T.O. in the fact that it appears it's all about him. I agree that he cannot shoulder all of the blame for the collapse, just as you can't say Romo was all to blame for the last few games of last year, especially with Baltimore and Philadelphia. It's a team effort and a team collapse. The QB gets all the credit or all the blame.

I think, between Orton and Simms, the Broncos will have a good shot, if their defense improves. Never know if they're the next Miami or Atlanta. Sometimes a player one would think would not fit, is indeed the missing piece, such as Romo. Who would have thought an undrafted free agent from a small Illinois school would be running one of the most visible teams of the NFL? When I say visible, I'm not doing an ATA thing here, but simply stating the fact that the Cowboys do get attention, be it positive or negative.

If anyone who reads this is not aware of ATA, just contact me, and I'll show you a Cowboy fan who is also an idiot. I hate to talk about fellow Cowboy fans, or any fan for that matter, but this one is exceptional, and brings criticism upon himself.

Those "boos" you hear are not from me..........but you've had your run ins with ATA, so maybe it's remnants from all those other ATA posts?........*grins*

I think Chicago is so desperate to get a "decent" QB, that they sacrificed the farm. They robbed Peter to pay Paul, so to speak, and it might bite them in the gluteous maximus before it's over with. But, what amazed me is, they kept playing Grossman all that time, and he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. I watched Orton play a few times, and he was better, in my opinion, but yet they kept starting Grossman. I never could figure that out.

Broncos.

April 5, 2009  04:48 AM ET

Cutler is a chump, always will be a chump. Period! He did put up some great numbers (between the 20s), but the offense stumbled badly inside the red zone and could have EASILY scored double the points that they actually did. The offense will be fine with a solid running back and either of the 2 quarterbacks on the roster now. The Patriots-style offense that denver will be running doesn't need a superstar quarterback with a chip on his shoulder. Get a runnig back and fix the defense -- and the broncos will be in the super bowl long before cry-baby Cutler will.

April 5, 2009  05:38 AM ET

Bears......... I dont know y people think they sold the farm by giving up two 1st rounds and a third round pick. We got 5th round pick back with that it gives us 8 picks this year. WE do need WR but we still could get 1 in the draft or free agenty. With Hester i agree he's not a #1 but with Orton throwing to him he had to slow down to catch the ball. And Denver dont fix the defence and get someone under center in the next 2 years . The BEARS are the winners.. BULL_SHIRT are u saying its going to be easy to replace Cutler? Being a BEAR fan i know it not easy........This is best BLOG page i've seen and read in along time with level headed people talking ..................................Well besize CHUCKY cheez up there. good luck all in 09 BEAR DOWN

As I mentioned, everyone has their own opinion about whether this was a good deal or not, whether Cutler can make it with the Bears, or just anything to do with this situation. It's interesting to see a variety of opinions. I'm not judging Cutler or anyone else, including any fans.

Hopefully, this will work out for both teams, and both can be more competitive this coming season. It's always good for the game, when teams are competitive and anyone can win at any given moment. I don't like blow outs, or 3 yards and a cloud of dust, but good, hard fought nail biters.
