I am hoping that the Jets sign Austin in the next couple days. I also hope that they don't match the offer. There are a number of capable receivers available in the 2nd round this year. The top 5 or 6 will be gone but there are good players anxious to be Cowboys. Jones has said its not a priority to draft a receiver but the loss of Austin would make it one in the 2nd round or 3rd round. Some of these receivers will be around in the 4th round.
Brandon Tate UNC. 6' 1'' 198 08 REC. 40 YDS. 644 AVG. 16.1 TD. 3
Tate has an injury that may cost him draft position. SN Preview has him rated 4th best receiver. He is a strong blocker, big hands, runs good routes, makes hard contact catches, uses size to shield defender, hard runner who breaks tackles, has size and agility to avoid jams. (SN Preview)
Derrick Williams Penn St. 5'11'' 197 08 REC. 44 YDS. 485 AVG. 11.0 TD. 4
Williams has good jumping ability, fearless over the middle, takes hard hits and holds onto ball, runs crisp sharp routes, always gains yards after contact, lacks explosiveness off the ball, can't run by corners, will defeat jam, not a good blocker, has everything it takes to be a pro, should be drafted in 2nd round. (SN Preview)
Mohammed Massaquoi Geo.. 6'1'' 210 08 REC. 58 YDS. 920 AVG. 15.9 TD. 8
Massaquoi is athletic, runs full speed in a blink, holds onto ball when hit, looks thin, poor route runner, doesn't fight for jump balls, lacks size and strength, hands and toughness impress scouts, not a tackle breaker, he is best suited as a backup until he gains weight/strength and polishes his routes. (SN Preview)
Fanball.com 09 Draft Preview has Dallas picking up Massaquoi with their 2nd round pick.
Joaquin Iglesias OKLA. 6' 204 08 REC.74 YDS. 1,150 AVG. 15.5 TD. 10
Iglesias is smart, very polished route runner, Fanball.com has him rated their 9th best wr., good body control, will make plays after the catch, doesn't have great speed, needs work on getting off a jam, scout feel he can help a team immediately, good KO returner, a slot receiver type, must get stronger and learn how to beat jam coverage. Texas native. (Fanball.com 09 Draft Preview)
Brian Robiske Ohio St. 6'3'' 207 08 REC. 42 YDS. 535 AVG. 12.7 TD. 8
Robiske has excellent size, physical receiver, good hands, son of an NFL coach, knows football, runs nice routes, scored 24 TDs in college, lacks blazing speed, doesn't make defenders miss with moves, had 935 yds receiving in 07, scouts feel his smarts and physical tools make him a safe pick but not alot of upside. (Fanball 09 Draft Preview)
Louis Murphy FL. 6'2'' 200 08 REC. 38 YDS. 655 AVG. 17.2 TD. 7
Murphy has good height and speed, good leaping ability, long arms, good hands, down the field threat, must work on route running, needs some polishing overall, scouts love his speed, Fanball feels this guy is a 2nd day pick because hes a bit raw. (Fanball 09 Draft Preview)
Brooks Foster UNC. 6'0'' 204 08 REC. 30 YDS. 334 AVG. 11.1 TD. 2
Foster is rated 25th best by Fanball.com Preview (no info.), naturally athletic, makes acrobatic catches, can handle pressure, excellent hands, questionable toughness, avoids contact, average production, not as competitive as receiver should be, verticle threat, big time ability, not consistant, needs time but could turn into great pro. ( PFW 09 Preview)
Sammie Stroughter Ore.St. 5'9'' 182 08 REC. 70 YDS. 1.040 AVG. 14.7 TD. 7
Stroughter is a scrappy small player, excellent toughness, good hands, nice burst off line, great playmaker with ball, creates, good elusiveness, hard to bring down, not a downfield threat, poor size, not that strong, but gives 100% every play, had over 1,000 yards in two of his college yrs, good intangibles, won't take a play off, Gary Clark type, good punt returner, (Fanball.com 09 Preview} THIS GUY CAN PLAY! HELLO JERRY!!!
Austin Collie BYU. 6'1'' 205 08 REC. 105 YDS. 1,538 AVG. 1,538 TD. 15
Collie led the NCAA in receiving yards, good size, not excellent physical traits, lacks outstanding speed, 25 yrs old already, very intelligent, good character, good height, good hands, fanball says this guy can be a solid pocession wr., confident, has a feel for holes in zones, tackled easily, system helped numbers, not savvy, slot receiver type. (Fanball/PFW 09 Previews)
Quan Cosby Texas 5'9'' 191 08 REC. 92 YDS. 1,123 AVG. 12.2 TD. 12
Cosbie has good body control, makes acrobatic catches, catches ball in crowd, catches passes in clutch, good punt returner, solid character, not big, has problem beating physical corners, struggles to separate, 27 yrs old, great athlete, got drafted by Dodgers, PFW Preview thinks Cosby has the mental toughness to make it in the NFL. (PFW 09 Preview)
Jarrett Dillard Rice 5'10'' 185 08 REC. 87 YDS. 1.310 AVG. 15.1 TD. 20
Dillard had 60 TDs in college, productive receiver, long arms, very good hands, ecellent route runner, good vision, elusive with ball in hands, has sneaky way to relax corners, then runs by them, lacks great athleticism, lacks pure speed, doesn't block well, can be knocked off routes, hands aren't strong, one of most productive receivers in NCAA history, 14.1 career avg. per reception, just a football player. (Lindys' 09 Preview)
Brandon Gibson Wash. St. 6'1'' 202 2008 REC. 57 YDS. 673 AVG. 11.8 TD. 2
Gibson has legit NFL size, will fight through corner jams, good straight line speed, explodes out of breaks, creates seperation from top corners, soft hands, special teams' returner, lacks great deep speed, doesn't get alot of yards after a reception, had drops at Senior bowl, had injuries in 07, his experience with various multiple offenses makes him NFL ready, 3rd/4th round guy. (Lindys' 09 Preview).
The three guys I want are Stroughter, Murphy and Pat White as a trick/play type QB. You look at his TD/INT ratio at WV, you'll see what I mean. Aaaaggghhh, try 56/23? White had great numbers as a runner also, they rivaled Steve Slaton who just had 1300 yards for the Texans. Some scouts said White passed alot better then they expected. White could be everything we expected from Stanback. If hes there in the 4th, move up to get him. Brooks Foster needs something to motivate him, what about money? He could drop to us in the 5th round. Great ability. I am excited about our draft. Last year was the best in years!
Wow! I spent alot of time writing this. I love this sport and the Cowboys! We fans can look at this after Dallas drafts anyway. A fun site to visit is.................. www.nfldraftcountdown.com , the site has many draft links and NFL news sources.
