I have been a Cowboy fan since 1970. I have seen a quiet owner Clint Murchison who sat around and let GM Tex Schramm run the team from 1960-1988. The team had lots of success dispite no draft in their first season. Within 6 years, Dallas was fighting the mighty Packers down to the wire in 1966 before falling. The team went on to win for 20 straight winning seasons which is an NFL record. In 1971, the Dallas Cowboys won their first World Championship. Murchison was never heard from. He was the antonym of the camera loving attention grabbing electric owner Jerry Jones. Murchison will never see the Hall because maybe he was content to make some money and go home. I don't think I ever heard Murchison say a word? This is why he will never see the Hall. He let Tex Schramm run the show and act like an owner. Today Tex, the Cowboy representative for 29 years is in the Hall. He did things for the NFL too. In 1977, the Cowboys brought another trophy to Dallas.
In 1984, Murchisons' health started to fail and he sold the team to Bum Bright. Tex was still the GM and he stayed on. Bum was a very quiet owner much like Murchison was. You didn't hear a word from him. The Cowboys started to show cracks. After the Cowboys had a very disappointing playoff loss to the Rams in 83. Dallas' mystique was diminishing. The Cowboys fell to a 9-7 in 84 and looked like a team ready to have a losing season. In 1986, Dallas' 20 year winning streak ended. They finished 7-9. In 1987, their first owner Clint Murchison died. The Dallas Cowboys' run was over. Under Bum Bright, they lost their flair and their winning attitude. Landry who was good or great for his 29 seasons had a 3-13 team. This team was in disarray. The great drafts were gone. The league had caught up to the Cowboys' drafting success. Yes, it meant Landry was on the ropes. He had just had 3 straight losing seasons and the team was going south. The Dallas Cowboys needed a change but who would do it? Certainly not Landrys' long time friend Tex Schramm. Were the Cowboys gonna keep an old coach like Landry!? Tom Landry was 65 years old. Dallas' fans were in dismay.
It was Bum Bright and Jerry Jones who changed the Dallas Cowboys forever. In early 1989, Bright sold the team to an Arkansas' guy with a huge smile and a big wallet. The flamboyant new owner made the needed change immediately as he brought in Jimmy Johnson and you know the story after that. No one says it but it took guts, courage and some smarts to bring in Johnson. Jones pulled the plug on Tom Landry. The legend of the Dallas Cowboys was released. Long time GM Tex Schramm silently resigned. Now Jerry was the reason they either won or lost. Cowboy fans were excited about the changes! Johnson delivered with two World Championships from 1989 to 1993. I don't care what anyone says, Johnson leaving was not all because Johnson had differences with Jerry. Jimmy was burned out. The media reports were questionable at best. Well, no need to elaborate, we all know what happened. Switzer added another Super Bowl to the trophy case.
My thoughts on Jerry Jones as an owner. He is one of the best owners in the NFL. Most of the dislike is fuel from the haters around the NFL. Jerry brought back the hated Cowboys from the dead and won three Super Bowl titles. That was all he had to do. NFL fans will always dispise Jerry Jones for that. Jones' brashness just adds fuel to the fire. His player moves anger fans because he takes chances on players who've had problems with the law. Well, he hired someone to watch Pacman Jones so he could help the Cowboys win , is that a crime? Does that mean he approves of Adams' actions? Absolutely not. What owner cares about winning it all more then Jerry Jones? Who? Jerry has one of the highest payrolls in the NFL. He is the ideal owner. Yes, fans say Jerry needs to hire a GM. and may be right. Having said that , Jerry's Cowboys have the best regular season record in the NFC in the last three years with a record of 31-17 .645. Jerry has won three Super Bowls in his 20 years. Anyway you look at it, Jerry has won championships. You can't erase them. The Rooneys failed to win three championships in their first 20 years. I don't believe any owner in NFL history has done what Jerry Jones has done in their first 20 years. I really don't understand all the venom about this guy. You fans think people hate Jerry because hes loud or gives the Cowboys a bad image? Hmm, why do fans hate Romo and Aikman? Lack of class!? Bad image!? Is Aikman loud!? I think Jerrys been great with the Cowboys. His won-loss record is 173-147 .540. Robert Kraft owner of the Patriots is the only owner with as many Super Bowl titles (3) as Jones in the 20 year Jones' ownership. Kraft's Patriots are 175-145 .546 in the same 20 years.. Jones' teams have won 8 division titles, 3 conference championships, 3 Super Bowl titles, 12 winning seasons, 4 conference championship game appearances, 12 playoff wins and 11 playoff seasons. Jerry is the first owner in NFL history to win 3 Super Bowls in 4 years. His three Super Bowls are as many as any owner in the NFL in Jerry Jones' 20 years. As far as the critlcal fans, don't be shocked if Jerry wins a championship as a GM. If he does, I don't want to hear one word from you. To complain about Jerry whos won three rings is silly. I'll take him over any owner in the NFL. What NFL owner has won more rings then Jerry in his 20 years!? No one in football !!!! Thats reality, thats NFL history on Jerry.
