Once again the San Jose Sharks have proven to be a paper tiger. A team that every year is picked to win the Stanley Cup & every year comes up not just short but verrrry short. This is a team without the desire to go all out to win the ultimate prize. A team made up of players who are unwilling to make the sacrifice neccessary to raise the cup at the end of the playoffs. I do not understand this. Is the cup not what every hockey player wants? And yet this team will not make the effort to achieve that goal. They care only about minor nonsense like the presidents trophy.

Let's compare the Thornton-Marleau Sharks to the Nolan-Ricci teams. The current team has a higher skill level & wins more games in the regular season, but fails miserably in the playoffs. They were shutout twice in this series. Last night's game was a blowout. Since Thornton came here there have been at least three series that were major embarrasments. The Edmonton series, the Detroit series where they were on the verge of winning & then just fell apart, & this disaster. This never happened when Owen Nolan was captain. They actually made the conference finals once. Even when they lost a series, it was a tough tight series, usually with the Sharks as the lower seed. Now as a high seed, they regularly stink up the joint.

The lack of desire by this team can be traced back to the personalities of the two top players, Thornton & Marleau. Neither of these guys has that extra gear needed. They never get mad, there is no aggression & it permeates the lineup. Nolan & Ricci were warriors. They didn't take junk from anybody else. The skill of those teams was lower but the performance level was much higher. Can you imagine a Nolan-Thornton-Ricci team? Frankly, I think a team with those players & the current teams defense would have won two cups. But Thornton, Marleau & Michalek dissapear every playoffs. Think Nolan would have stood for that?

At this point I really would like to see a house cleaning because this team will never do anything. Trade Thornton, Marleau, Nabby & whoever & start over. This group is worthless. Make Boyle the captain & go out & get a power forward. Yeah, the team will be bad for a while, but the current team is unwatchable anyway.
