Bob Stanley - Had 132 saves on the Red Sox and set a team record in appearances.

Ellis Kinder - Kinder made 365 appearances as a Red Sox pitcher and he finished in the top ten for the MVP voting twice.

Carl Mays - Never had an ERA above 2.60 in his Red Sox career and he started and pitched in relief.

Reggie Cleveland - Made many appearances as a starter and relief pitcher for the Sox. Reggie struck out 103 batters in 1974.

Tom Burgmeier - He was only a pitcher in Boston for 5 years, he was a closer in one of those years. In just one year of being a closer and four of a middle reliever gained 40 saves.

Starters:

Catcher: Carlton Fisk - Batted above .300 in 3 of his 10 season in Boston and never had a slugging percentage below .415.

First Base: Jimmie Foxx - He was a great hitter. He hit up to 50 homeruns in a season with the Sox and he had a consistent average. He could also drive in a large amount of runs.

Second Base: Bobby Doerr - He could hit with power, he could hit for average, he could hit triples, doubles, and singles, and he could drive in runs.

Third Base: Wade Boggs - He could hit for average very well, hitting above .300 in all but his last season on the Sox. His career average is .328.

Right Field: Dwight Evans - He wasn't the best average hitter, but he could hit homeruns and he could score. He also managed to stay healthy most of the time.

Designated Hitter: Ted Williams - Two time MVP and he wa srunner up four times. He was the last player to bat .400. He got walks, he drove in runs, and he could hit homers. He wwould have been more successful, but he fought in the army.

First Base: Mo Vaughn

Second Base: Billy Goodman

Third Base: Larry Gardner

Bob Stanley? Mr. Wild Pitch in "86?!?

Give me Lee Smith over the Steamer any day!

July 12, 2007  09:18 PM ET

As I said at the top, I am only counting how they played as a player on the Boston Red Sox. Lee Smith wasn't even on the Red Sox for 3 seasons while Bob Stanley was with us for his entire career. I am also counting his entire career not just one pitch or even one season. I am sure that if Lee Smith was on the Sox for one or two more years he would definitely take that spot.

Fair enough. But I never trusted the Steamer--he always made me nervous. He took the mound, and I got a beer. Of course, the Sox weren't known for a fabulous middle relief staff until, uh, this year. Besides--Lee Smith was an excellent tipper...and he smelled nice, too.
