As you know, or now you will, I???m up on Twitter and Facebook. I often get Tweeted (which is illegal in some southern states) or Poked. I receive email too. I once received an ESP, but when I responded, the recipient???s mailbox was full. Point is, I???m more accessible than your average superstar athlete. It???s the 21st century baby. The walls are down. Let???s party.
Actually, I don???t want to party with you. Don???t take that personally. It???s just that I???m 41 and I don???t ???party??? anymore in the way the term implies. Partying to me nowadays is eating dinner in the dining room and letting the dishes sit in the sink until the next day. Yes, priorities change.
I???m fortunate enough to have tasted success in my life; a lot of success, at least on the baseball diamond. This proclivity to not fail as often as others led a fan to send me a question through Facebook. Here???s what it was:
???Did you ever have stop signs in your career? And, what did you do to turn them into speed bumps and not stop signs (to keep going), even though it slowed you a little bit????
I was prepared to answer this woman. (Yeah, ???twas a lady who asked the question.) I didn???t pause and think. I just typed. I???m not a guy who considers himself to have all of the answers. Many of you might even think I???m just a self-promoting twit who gets Tweeted on Twitter and once threw one helluva squiggly curveball. But when I wrote my answer, it came from my heart. It poured out of my soul. Motivation comes from many sources. Maybe a few of you will consider this a valid one. Here???s my answer:
???I love your speed bump question. I hit them all the time. Some are higher than others, but here???s the thing that I do: I don???t think about them. I don???t think about quitting - it never enters my mind. If I sense it creeping in, I just press ahead. DO NOT allow yourself to ever get down. Treat each day like one more step. It???s a clich??, but you can only take one step at a time. It???s taken me years to get where I am right now, and I???m still not where I want to be yet. The things that you and I want to do are coveted by so many people. It can almost be intimidating. Don???t think about that. Just focus on your goal, focus on what you???re going to do that day to reach your goal, enjoy the journey and succeed.
???When you have bad days, days where you feel like you???re going nowhere, use that time to think a little. Why do you feel that way? What minor, lousy task that you???ve been putting off can you accomplish? Some task that doesn???t take a lot of thought. Don???t let being upset spoil your progress. You can allow yourself to be disappointed, but never, ever give up. Not if you believe in yourself. If someone says no, and your gut tells you it???s right, find a way to do it.
???That???s my answer. You???re a special person. You work hard. You???ve accomplished a lot already. Keep at it.???
You might agree with me. Or you might think I???m full of it. Maybe. Maybe I???m full of crap, but I don???t think I am. Sure, I???m full of myself, but that comes with the territory. You try surviving a life with 55,000 people cheering you. It???s bound to go to your head just a little bit. Once you get a piece of that, you learn motivation real fast to get some more. And you wonder why it???s so hard for guys to walk away from the game.
As you???ve always been there for me, I offer this in return: I???m here for you.
Take care,
