Ryan Zimmerman has a 29 game hit streak and I don't think people outside of the DC Metro area care. I have been a fan of Zimmerman since he came into the league from Virginia and I personally think he's the best third baseman in the National League(I know this will set off Mets fans, but I don't care...it's the truth!) If Zimmerman played for a different team, any team located in a media hotbed(New York, Chicago, Los Angeles), then he would be getting more coverage.
I was present for one of the games during the streak while in DC and the fans there adore him. He's a local boy who just signed a contract extension and wants to see the Nationals prosper and I think that the team will improve around him. However, I think the national media isn't picking up on this. If he gets to 31 games, he ties the Nationals/Expos consecutive game hit streak record(set by Vladimir Guerrero in 1999). He is only one game behind George Brett for second place in consecutive game hit streaks by a third basemen(which is also one of the most demanding positions to play in baseball). Sure, he is only half way to Joe DiMaggio and is 15 games away from Pete Rose's consecutive game hit streak for a third baseman record, at 44 games, but where's the love?
