I haven't had much to say on the state of sports in awhile, having generally felt disillusioned with the whole sordid mess where talk of arrests and behavior outstrip talk of teams and performance. That being said I felt I wanted to offer my perspective on Michael Vick, because the argument that is going on about whether he should play or not is missing something fundamental in my humble opinion...
Some say that the nature of his crime is heinous enough that he shouldn't be allowed to play, others say that he deserves a second chance. The problem, as I see it, is that no-one is widening the scope to take in the other players out there...
I happen to feel the discussion should not be about Vick, but about criminals period. Tank Johnson, Chris Henry, Pacman Jones, and other repeat offenders. NONE of them should be in the game, especially not the guy from Dallas who -killed- someone in a DWI accident! (Can't recall the name at this moment)
Vick committed a heinous crime, worse he lied about it repeatedly, for that he probably doesn't deserve a second chance. I don't believe -any- of these people deserve a second chance either, the NFL is a MULTIBILLION DOLLAR industry, these people are paid - in some cases - 10's of millions of dollars to play a game. For that reason alone they should be held to a higher standard. It ain't hard to avoid getting arrested, DON'T drive if you've been drinking, DON'T go to strip clubs at 3 in the morning, DON'T let your temper get the best of you. And if you do? You're out, period. The NFL is among the most lucrative careers you could possibly have, with wise financial behavior you could easily be set for life after several years playing at a high level, if you're too stupid to toe the line with THAT on stake, you don't deserve the game. Period. ANY of you.
So no, Vick shouldn't play, but kick all the other repeat offenders out too, for good. I'm sick and tired of all the press about who did what stupid illegal bulls**t lately, and for that reason I'm effectively done with the whole lot of it. I have a choice in what I consume, and I am choosing to abandon ALL professional organized sports at this point, until the news goes back to revolving around the sport instead of the idiots that ruin it.
