I wanted to put up a quick post heading into the final week of the Serie A season. I'll do a full blown year in review a few weeks from now.
Inter wrapped up the title weeks ago and has only been playing out the string.
Juventus, Milan, and Fiorentina have spent the past weeks jockeying for second and third place. Juventus are guaranteed to finish at least third and only need to achieve the same result as Milan to take second place.
Milan really need to focus on their battle with Fiorentina. If Fiorentina beats Milan at home in the final by two goals or more, Fiorentina takes third place. That means Milan would fall into the 4th Champions League Qualifying Round for Non-Champions, where'd they'd likely have to face some bigger name competition than they'd be used to facing at such an early stage in the season. It's more vital for Fiorentina to avoid the qualifying stages because their low ranking means they'd be unseeded and would likely draw either Arsenal, Shaktar Donetsk, Sporting Lisbon, or some other big pedigree squad. Milan really needs to make sure they win or draw that game, though they still take third with a one goal loss. It is worth noting that Fiorentina are tied with Inter for the best home record in Serie A.
Genoa, Roma, and Lazio have locked up qualification for the Europa League already.
Lecce and Reggina have already been relegated.
The final battle for a relegation spot is between Bologna and Torino. Both teams have 34 points. Bologna would win any tiebreakers between the teams due to head to head record. Torino have to face Roma away, while Bologna has a much easier match up at home against Catania.
So if you're interested, Fiorentina-Milan, Roma-Torino, and Bologna-Catania are the only Serie A matches that matter in some way this coming weekend.
