Helio Castroneves win Sunday in the Indy 500 is something that if it happened in a movie we would laugh at. From the possibility of going to prison for 5 years (one report said 35) to winning the most prestigious race in the world in what? two months?
What I would like to know is what happened. Did the IRS not actually have anything on Helio & his sister or did the IRS blow the case ala Marcia Clark & OJ. The case originally sounded strong, what with "shell" corporations in Columbia & the Netherlands. But maybe Helio was right. It wasn't that he was avoiding taxes, it just was he wouldn't pay them till he was paid. But if he controlled the company then it doesn't matter, he's guilty.
But all this doesn't matter. He was acquitted. So we get to talk about the most charismatic driver in open wheel, & frankly in all of racing winning the world's most famous race for the third time, with talk of him winning four or even setting the record with five victories. he certainly has the skill to do it. He's on a dominant team, & unlike other successful Indycar drivers, I don't think he's interested in driving the taxicabs in NASCAR. So what will happen the rest of the year? I want to see "race fans" watch a real race series, not the reality show that is NASCAR.
