Yesterday it was announced that Tony Eury Jr. is out as crew chief of the #88 Amp Chevy driven by his cousin Dale Earnhardt Jr. In 48 races at Hendrick, Eury and Earnhardt had one win, a win which was made possible by fuel mileage, and finished last year in 12th in the points standings. Earnhardt Jr. is currently 19th in points and is coming off a 40th place finish at Lowes.

Team manager Brian Whitesell will be the crew chief this weekend at Dover, while Lance McGrew will take over next week on an interim basis. McGrew, as you may remember, was the crew chief with Brian Vickers when Vickers became the youngest NASCAR Busch Series Championship in 2003. It has been said that Eury Jr. has been transferred to the R&D team.

So, good move or bad move? I hate to say it, but this was a good move. It seemed that either the crew chief or the driver had to go, and there is no way that Earnhardt will be leaving Hendrick except on his own accord. I believe that Eury should have instead been moved to a different team as crew chief, either a Cup or Nationwide team. Eury has proved in his time in NASCAR he has what it takes to be a crew chief. I would doubt that he will still be part of the R&D team in 2010.

Will this move help or hurt Earnhardt? I see it getting better, but not much. Possibly a win at Talladega or Daytona and definately more top 10s than so far. However, don't be surprised if some of the media begins talking about Jr.'s job being on the hot seat at the end of the year. But as everyone knows, Earnhardt will be in the 88 car in 2010 and many years beyond.
