It was announced today that the Atlanta Braves have released future Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine. He had just come off 2 games of 11 scoreless innings in the minors, but Glavine was due a $1 million bonus if the Braves added him to the active roster and would have received another $1.25 million after 90 days. It has been said by his agent that Glavine is not retiring, so let's wait and see what MLB makes a move to sign him. My two guesses are the Mets and the Angels.

So, what does this mean for Glavine's Hall of Fame status? I mean, is he going into Cooperstown as a Brave or as something else. Word has it that Tom was not too thrilled with Atlanta's decision. Who exactly would? He rehabbed, tried to return, got hurt again, rehabbed again, and then just when things looked good BOOM! He's gone. I still say Glavine must go into the Hall of Fame as a Brave.

Now what does this mean to the Braves rotation? It seemed that sometime this year Glavine would move into the spot currently held by Kris Medlen, but what's going to happen now? Sorry Kris, you won't be keeping that spot for long. In about a week or two, Mr. Tommy Hanson will be moved up to take over.

After this recent turn of events for the Braves organization, and as a long time fan, I am highly dissappointed in their actions, first they let Maddux, then Smoltz, and now Glavine AGAIN!?!?!? What's next Chipper??

I've lost a lot of respect for the management in Atlanta

Releasing Glavine was a business decision....that's all. I realize what he has done for the Braves (and the city of Atlanta), but you can't sit around and 'hope' that the surgically repaired shoulder and elbow of a 43 yr old pitcher will carry the fifth spot in the rotation. Wren is just trying to field the best possible team with the budget he has been given. It's time to let Hanson come up and take his shot.
If they had kept Glavine and he ended up being 0-6 with 5.00+ ERA, you would hear these same people criticizing Wren for keeping Glavine on the roster too long.....can't have it both ways.

Totally agree 100%

Yea - a fastball in the mid 80's with a change up in the low 80's will not get major league hitters out. As much as I hate it for Glavine, he needs to shut it down. On the positive, he could go into the Hall with Maddux.

Don't worry about Cooperstown, players aren't allowed to choose which team's hat they get to wear for their statues. This assures that players can't be paid to choose one team over another. Instead, a player's team is chosen based upon how much relevance said team had to that player's career (For instance Wade Boggs wanted to have a Yankee cap, but had his best seasons playing for the Red Sox and thus wore their hat).
Also, I can't blame the Braves for this. Glavine was suppossed to be in the rotation in April and his performance would have a direct impact on whether Hanson would come up or not. Since he was still hanging around the minors by June, the decision to promote Hanson was obvious. Some like to argue that money was the reason, but even if this were the case (I disagree), I seem to remember a certain player bolting for New York when the money was right. I don't blame Glavine for taking the NY contract, but he can't be hypocritical about the situation with the Braves now.
