The Braves outfield has not been too powerful so far this year, so Atlanta decided to try and change that. One day after sending starting CF Jordan Schafer down to AAA, Atlanta aquired All Star CF Nate McLouth in a trade where the Braves sent minor league players Gorkys Hernandez, Charlie Morton, and Jeff Locke. McLouth has everything the Braves don't have. He has power, which the outfield has needed, speed (McLouth has 7 steals so far this year, the entire Braves team has 11), and fielding ability (won a Gold Glove award last year). Also he just signed a contract through 2011, meaning he won't just be leaving after the year like say Mark Teixeira last year with the Angels. So, Good deal or bad deal for the Braves?
GOOD DEAL! Look who we gave up for this All Star caliber player! A pitcher in Charlie Morton who is doing pretty good in AAA this year but was horrible in the majors last year (4-8 record). The one that hurts the most is Hernandez, who was said to be one of the best prospects the Braves had. Still, with all the upcoming outfield talent Atlanta has, (Schafer, Brandon Jones, Jason Heyward) it shouldn't be a huge loss. It seems the main reason Pittsburgh might have made this trade was to free up a starting job for Andrew McCutchen. The 22-year-old outfielder was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis, where he was hitting .303 with four homers, 20 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.
McLouth is suppose to catch a 6 a.m. flight to Atlanta today. Let's hope we can see him in a Braves uniform as early as tonight against the Cubs.
