The Pittsburgh Pirates ownership group and executive staff must like using the word "rebuilding." For over a decade now, they've talked about the wisdom of relinquishing veteran talent in exchange for promising young players. They've used phrases like "the sky is the limit" or "major league talent" or "top tier prospect" to describe the value they have gotten in return.

But everything remains a charade. This front office and this ownership group have no real commitment to building a championship team. They have no commitment because, more often than not, they trade the "great prospects" they have acquired or developed instead of accumulating enough veteran talent to win games consistently.

Imagine if they had Jason Bay, Nate McLouth, Freddy Sanchez, Ryan Doumit, and Aramis Ramirez. Those are five big league bats and five solid gloves. With the Pirates' pitching this season, those are guys who, in the middle of a lineup, could really help a team win some games.

But that would go against the Pirates executive philosophy. After all, what sense would it make to develop young talent if you weren't going to give it away...
