Just wanted to comment on the incident at the French Open that, in my opinion, just made France and its people look bad.
I'm speaking about the idiot who ran onto the court trying to put a hat on Roger Federer. Not only him but the nearly idiotic reaction from those security guards who tried to stop him.
Well, if you saw it, the idiot runs out into the court, and we then see the scenes of him first displaying a flag or banner then trying to place a hat on Federer's head. Then the security guards are shown chasing him, he jumps over the net, then gets tackled. With me so far. Good.
That's all well and good that the dude was stopped, but. . . what I fail to understand is how the simpleton was even allowed to get as far as he did.
First-- as I observed-- he was initially chased by five security guards dressed in black suits. Looked very nice in their black suits as a matter of fact. Nice and spiffy-looking blokes. But they just slowed down and allowed the chap to jump over the net before getting taken down. . . similar to one of those Mike-Curtis-like takedowns. Yeah!
(You of the younger generation probably don't know who Mike Curtis was. He was a linebacker for the Baltimore Colts [yes, Colts used to play in Baltimore before sneaking off to Indianapolis] back in the 70's. It was during a game when another imbecile decided to run out onto the field to snatch the football, which he is able to do. Next, before the dude can get very far, Mr. Curtis mows his butt down into the ground, baby. Fantastic! Just a little history lesson there.)
So why did those five dudes slow down? (What's the matter guys. . . thought you might get your suits dirty if you tackled the idiot? Try wearing khakis and t-shirts next time. It's Summer. It'll be cooler.) Except maybe they were still somewhat surprised or shocked that someone was able to get past them. Or, maybe they saw that their compadre across the net would tackle him ("Yeah, Pierre will tackle him. We have dates tonight. We'll let him get his suit dirty.)
Second, as I mentioned, he was out there displaying his banner before trying the hat trick on Fed. So why weren't the guards out there at that time trying to stop him before he was able to get to Fed? What took so long? Were they playing poker or checking out the chicks? I was thinking and just said outloud, "They sure did take their sweet time." I mean, I can understand if the fool was zigzagging out in an open field and running with blinding speed; but he wasn't. The fool should not have even reached Mr. Federer.
Locally here in San Antonio on Sundays a couple of sportscasters by the names of Don Harris and David Chancellor have a segment which they call "Bonehead of the Week" in which they pick a couple of people or organizations or incidents which they deem worthy of being called idiotic. They then will have the audience vote for the winner and display the results at the end of their program. For this week, they had chosen the fool at the Open and the Atlanta Braves for releasing 42-year old (yes, 42-year old) Tom Glavine. (Didn't understand that particular pick). Anyway, I think I would've added those five security guards as well.
So why the fuss? Well, I know it has been awhile, been years ago; but what about the Monica Seles situation in which some thug had run out to the court and stabbed her. It was reported that the reason the thug stabbed her was because he didn't want Seles taking over the number one ranking from Stefi Graff. Well, what if that fool at the French Open hadn't wanted Roger Federer to tie Pete Sampras for the most Grand Slam wins (14). We don't know for sure. We don't know for sure until something tragic happens.
Sorry you French people, but that just looks bad. You people have the brass when it comes to using nuclear energy while we here in America are picking our noses deciding whether we should use it our not; but when it comes to security and similar situations, you fine folks or at least your country is found sadly wanting.
Well, thanks for dropping by. Think I'll catch up on my beauty sleep. Hope I wake up in time to catch some of Game 3.
