Two blogs ago, I said that I'm going to start my own NFL predictions, but that has fallen through.  Mainly because what my boy DanTM said earlier about such a blog; people rarely go out on a limb and predict upsets or something else outlandish.  Well, I'm not the exception, so I've decided to stay away from predictions.  But, I am tired of hearing about David Beckham and here's why.

Yes, he is a good soccer player.  I actually watched the World Cup the last time it was on and got to see him play, pretty amazing how he can bend the ball around the wall of players on a penalty shot, but that was really all I saw.  He didn't do much else on the field.  If this one thing he can do puts him up there with the greatest in soccer, no wonder I don't like the sport.  I didn't see any amazing dribbling from him, not one amazing goal that sent his team on, not much of a leader.  With this in mind, why is he considered so amazing?  Why should America care if he is here?  We already tried to draw attention to the sport by bringing in Pele and that didn't work, didn't even put a blip on the radar of American soccer.  The sport just doesn't fit our country.  Yes, a lot of young kids like to play and the occasional fan brings up something about how cool it is and fun to play.  These people obviously never played football.  I believe that soccer is a good kids and womens game, but that's it.  Watching a bunch of grown men trying their hardest not to hit each other and go for an hour without accomplishing anything but maybe, MAYBE, one goal is just boring.  And when there is contact, one of the players falls to the ground and starts crying like his femur has been torn out of his leg, then gets up two seconds later, walks around, and is fine.  Pathetic.  Also, the strategy is boring, like hockey, why pass the ball backward?  Why aren't more players attacking the net?  I know, there's rules saying that certain players can't go past a certain point, also pathetic.  Have everyone attack the net, score, then have the other team do the same thing.  That would be exciting.  Goal scoring and a game that is all offense.  I might pay attention if that happens.

Back to Beckham.  As of right now, he has done absolutely nothing for the sport of soccer in America.  HIM and his WIFE have gotten a lot of publicity, but that happens when doing photo-ops half naked and being extremely rich.  But has he done anything for the sport of SOCCER?  NO.  Nothing.  Everyone is talking about him and nothing else.  Will he make a splash when he DOES start playing?  Maybe for a few games.  People will watch the first few games to see what happens, will notice that, yes, they are still watching soccer, and then turn the channel to something else.

It was a good idea by the Galaxy, but America just doesn't care about the sport.  Bringing in one player will not amount to much.  Now, on the flip side.  What if he played for America when the World Cup comes back around?  That would generate a lot of buzz, but undoubtedly, he will play for England, and America will get bounced out again, and no one will care.
