Revs lost 2-1 against City Islanders in overtime at last night's (6/30/09) game. It was a pretty big upset in the US Open Cup, I think I will write another post on the other upsets that occured last night. From what I read there were many.
Revelotion played hard though, despite their situation. To begin with, they went into this match with a lot of their star players on the injured list back at home. Especially their big point makers Joseph and Twellman. Matt Reis also didn't make an appearance. Because of injuries, penalties, and other duties the Revs were only able to dress 15 players and all the subs were made around half-time. Which became a huge problem in the second half when Dube and Videira came out on injuries.
After that happened, the game completely changed. Islanders now had 2 more players on the field than the Revs and had momentum on their side. 1-1 tied the game at the end of regulation time. There were now two 15 minute halfs. Play coninued as before. Despite putting in a lot of effort, Revs couldn't make it happen with two less on the field and having pretty much all of their star players/forwards out of the game. A lot of time was spent in front of their own goal and it was only a matter of time before one sunk in.
Thunder clouds rolled over the field right at halft time and dumped a ton of rain. That's New England for you. But luckily it cleared right up as they got ready for the second half. The stands were a little wet, but the night stayed clear for the rest of the game.
Revs trying to regain their composure, but the odds were quite against them.
I believe this would have been an easy win if the Revs had had a full roster and were able to play some of their big players, but as it was Islanders walked away with the win and will advance on in the US Open Cup to play against DC United on July 7th.
