I'll admit that I'm not an MLS fan, nor a fan of the sport in general, but you'd have to be living under a rock to be unaware of all the hype surround David Beckham and the LA Galaxy! Just how big is his debut on Saturday suppose to be? Obviously, the game is sold out...probably a first for the team in a long time...ESPN is televising it live, and for some reason they think they need 19 cameras to track Beckham alone!! You're now wearing the hottest LA fashion if your sporting the number 23 on your back. Anyways, back on track...He was scheduled to make his debut performance this Saturday against Chelsea, but today Galaxy coach Frank Yallop said the midfielder is "day-to-day". Apparently, Beckham originally hurt his left ankle playing for England in a European Championship qualifier on June 6. The pain flared up again June 17 in his final game with Real Madrid. His ankle is still swollen but was taped today at practice where he was limited to stretching and kicking drills.

If you ask me, I think this is nothing more than another media campaign. As if the man needed more attention!?! He's going to play on Saturday because that's what he's getting paid $250 million to do. Not to mention the fact that half of those recently converted Galaxy fans wouldn't stick around until the second game if Beckham was a no show on Saturday.

Only time will tell, but my money is on Beckham playing.

Well said. I like the "stunt" from the standpoint that I have a growing appreciation for the game of soccer, and I'd love to see it become a viable sport in the US. That said, I much prefer the World Cup or the English Premier League to the MLS. We've got a team in Chicago, and I've tried to get behind the team, but even to a novice like myself, its clearly an inferior brand of soccer to what is played around the world. Just putting Beckham on the field doesn't really change that. Maybe in time, more players will come to the US to play and things will be different.
