If you enjoy college football outside your corner of the country, here are the games for the 2nd week (Sat Sept 12th) you MUST SEE, the games you SHOULD SEE, and the games that might look good but DON'T BOTHER. There are too many interesting matchups between the conferences to list, including the monster game between Ohio State and Southern Cal. Please let me know if you think I missed a game and I'll explain why I left if off the list or add it.
MUST SEE
Clemson at Georgia Tech 7:30 Thurs Sept. 10th
I have a real job now so Thursday isn't the "close down the bar and stumble to the cab night" it was in college. But there is something to be said for headed out for a bit when there is only one workday separating you from the weekend. The perfect solution is Thursday football, wings, and a pitcher. This game is borderline SHOULD SEE but gets the nod for being played on Thursday without any competition.
Georgia Tech is possibly the favorite to come out of the ACC. They return 11 starters for their triple option attack that should be even more potent and their entire defensive back 7. This is a team that finished ranked last year. Clemson won't start off in the top 10 which means they should have a fairly good season. They return 9 guys from a very good defense and the only question in new QB Willy Korn. If he comes through, this team will contend.
USC at Ohio State 8:00 Sat Sept 12th
Ohio State will have no excuses if they can't beat a USC team breaking in a new quarterback at home. Both teams lose a lot of key guys on both sides of the ball but both teams have a wealth of blue chip future stars waiting to step right in. If OSU loses, the entire Big10 will have another year of getting 0 respect.
SHOULD SEE
Miami at Florida St. 8:00 Mon Sept. 7th *Should have been included in week 1*
Yeah both these teams have been down and neither is going to contend for a National Title this year. But this game will always big in establishing the hierarchy for Florida recruiting and both teams should be much improved and in the thick of the ACC race. Florida State always has a good defense and this year they return the QB and all 5 OLineman. If the offense can be good the team will be great. Miami has recruited like Miami over the last couple years and this team should reflect that. This game may tell us which of these school will be challenging for the ACC.
Notre Dame at Michigan 3:30 Sat Sept. 12th
Who will stop the bleeding? My bet is the Irish but we will see.
DON'T BOTHER
Cincinnati at Rutgers 4:00 Mon Sept. 7th *Should have been included in week 1*
Cincinnati won the Big East last year while Rutgers had a recent football revival. Neither of these teams will be in contention for the BCS this year. Cincinnati's D was a large part of their sucessful equation in 2008 but they return 1 starter. Last year Rutgers went a mediocre 7-5 in their first year w/out Ray Rice although they won their last 6 games. But Rutgers doesn't have a good option at QB, don't have any great receivers, and will not be overcome facing 8 guys in the box against better teams. At least a year away for both schools.
North Carolina at Connecticut 12:00 Sat Sept. 12th
Neither school has a rich football tradition but both schools have been much better over the last 3 years. The similarities end this season with NC shooting for its best ever football team while Conn shoots for bowl eligibility. Now if this were baskeball...
