What's next? Who else will we call "the latest and greatest to fall"?

By now, everyone is well aware of the tragic fall of David "Big Papi" Ortiz from grace. The cuddly slugger with his big smile and bigger moonshots was a icon for baseball. Bud Selig once referred to baseball as being in a "Golden" era and that Ortiz was at the center of that era.

And today? Today we sit on our hands and wait for the day to come where Big Papi sets us straight. When he comes clean and tells us it's just a mix up. That he didn't know the magnitude of what he was really doing in this "loosey-goosey" time. Or maybe he'll just deny the whole thing and take the road less traveled a la Clemens and Bonds.

The most ironic piece in this moment is that we aren't angry. No one is shouting for an answer. Clouds of reporters are not hovering over his world. Truth is, most of us don't care anymore. It's not that we don't care about the game; we're numb to the names.

With each passing day, each month and each year we hear more of the same. Bigger names, bigger lies and more often we care less.

Is that a good thing for fans? Probably not, we should be angry, we should be upset and outraged and saddened. OUR HERO'S DECEIVED US! That should be our mantra in this time, but it's not.

Is that good for baseball? Apparently it is. The fans are still turning on the TV. Tuning the radio to (terrible) calls from John Sterling. Most importantly they are still walking through those gates to the ballparks.

And all that's left are a few shattered dreams in the wake of scandal.
