Okay, so for two days, I had been engaged in a debate with some random christian creationist and an NFL Player. Yes, an NFL player. Michael Ray Garvin, well known as a Football player and track star at Don Bosco and Florida State University, and the other guy debated for their position on why Christianity is "true." I, of course, took the side of science and reason. The transcript of this is below. Please comment if you wish:

Me:

Thank you. I hope you realize that the Earth is billions of years old and at least you believe in evolution. Also, I'm glad you're going to play some football, good luck. However, I hate to break it to you and ruin the party, but I've read the Bible, and it is the most genocidal book ever made, advocating slavery, rape, prejudice, and murder (I invite you to read the despicable Leviticus 24 in your book). It is also the most contradictory work, getting the exact details of Jesus's death screwed up by four writers. Oh no, there are a lot of contradictions! The Jesus story happened to have been written years after the supposed Jesus died. There were also other messiahs, including Apollonius and Mitra. Can you explain why we had a plague of messiahs at that time? I invite you to a rational debate.
P.S.: I'm not an atheist, I'm an agnostic rationalist, but I'm a cultural Roman Catholic by celebrating Christmas and Easter w/ my family.

Michael Ray Garvin:

If you have read the bible meaning from the first page to the very last it would be almost impossible for you to say what you jus said. I hope your not stating your answers off of certain books and not THOROUGHLY reading the Word. I do not believe in evolution reason being God made us in his image so its impossible for us to evolve from a monkey or ape. Rationalist thinks like satan, he tries to question the word of God. I am sorry but if you keep believing what you believe the consequences could be something you would regret FOREVER. SO please read the bible again and THOROUGHLY and have FAITH!
Also i would like to add why have I never heard of your other so called messiahs. Why is Jesus SO much popular than the others? Why is Christianity the biggest religion in the world? A wise man once said DO not be wise in your own eyes. If you want the right answers go to the God who created us Im sure He knows all. The Bible is His word and Truth. You must be an athiest because you don't trust that this ALMIGHTY and POWERFUL God would make sure that His people would get the TRUTH! If you believe He created you why cant you believe He wrote the Bible through man to tell us about HIM?

Me:

Okay, first of all, I understand why you are a creationist. However, we did NOT evolve from monkeys; the human species evolved from a common ancestor from a slow process that took a couple hundred thousand years, although our closest relatives are gorillas and chimpanzees. We, humans, are very lucky because of a process called Natural Selection. We have evidence that is always coming in and we have a massive fossil record. Also, you believe that your God, the Judeo-Christian God, is almighty. If you were raised a Hindu, however, you would worship Krishna. If you were a Muslim, you would be following Allah. If you were a Buddhist, you would follow Buddha. If you were living in Ancient Greece, you would pray for Zeus. If you were a Mormon, you would be worshipping Joseph Smith, who created a racket racist religion out of Christianity. How is worshipping your God any less different than worshipping other Gods in other religions? Explain.

Other Person:

Woah dude, there were 4 stories of Jesus but they were the same stories told in different ways and perspectives. all 4 stories basically nailed the same thing. All 4 books/gospels demonstrated Jesus's love and wisdom on Earth and how such a perfect man would die for such sinful and dirty people.
Plus, the other religions that dont worship God the father are man-made religions. We did not create God or the worship of God but Humans created the worship of Buddha and etc. God created us to worship him, Christianity dates back to the beginning of the earth when it started as Judaism. You have the opportunity to accept and be in a relationship with the God that created you to love him. We ought to worship the ONE that created us instead of the one we created.

Me:

You really just have nothing but faith. Admit it, you don't have any scientific evidence other than the Bible (which is NOT scientific). The four Gospels are not at all historical records, and that they had multiple authors, all being written many decades after the Crucifixion - and moreover, that they do not agree on anything, all just contradicting each other. [Quoting Christopher Hitchens' "God is not Great" ] The entire New Testament is a work of crude carpentry, hammered together long after its purported events, and full of attempts to make things come out right. The Gospel of Mark was written 40 years after his death; the other three basically followed. As of today, we have only two scientific records of a person named Jesus. One states his name, and the other states that he was crucified. That's it; only two records that don't have to rely on sadistic text because the Bible is not a book of history, but a book of faith. It relies on stories that don't fit the profile as to how we think in a scientific context. It is fiction.
Also, it is interesting how you rely on blind faith and a book that was obviously man-made, while criticizing other religions for being man-made. Do you even know how Christianity was spread in earlier times? People were tortured and murdered during the crusades and the inquistions. And don't tell me that Saint Paul is proof of evidence. He came after Jesus died and basically disagreed with the other 12 apostles. He also makes NO mention of his mother Mary. When the Romans invaded Jersusalem in 70 AD, people were killed because they disagreed with the stories of Saint Paul. So the Gospel of Saint Paul is just another interpretation of a story that is so contradicting in coming to truth. How isn't this story man-made? What makes this story more truthful than historical evidence? How is the Bible any less different than the Koran or the Book of Mormon? How is the Bible not man-made, when it basically contradicts in many aspects? This isn't history; it's just fantasy.

Michael Ray Garvin:

Mike you are going about this the wrong route. Science is something that man has done and we all know men are not perfect. Why would you trust a man's reasoning over God's reasoning you are saying that man knows more than God which sounds crazy. You rely on science So much that you forget that science is not Perfect but God is! The safe way is to trust in God because science can not save your life or stop you from dieing bro! You will DIE one day so you better know where your going and have the RIGHT answers please! You do not want to fail this test of Life, because the people who fail Die! God bless Bro!

Me:

I'm glad you care for my sake and I will for you too, but I want to conclude that science is about explaining the natural world and evidence is always piling on as we learn more in biology. We rely on science for medicine and health. So why throw out science when it clearly explains laws of science that have been tested and succeeded? Alas, how is God all perfect? Why is it that God is loving when in the Book of Exodus he kills the first born children of Egypt? Basically, you pick and choose passages that seem right for you. However, if you truely believe the Judeo-Christian God is perfect and you should follow him, you can't throw out some passages because they don't seem right. That is cheating and very cheap. I am not asking you to leave your religion: I'm only asking you should look at the overwhelming evidence for evolution and find truth and reason. That way, you are not as ignorant as you are. Thank you and good luck.

Michael Ray Garvin is the man! As a Noles fan Iliked him, now after reading his patient responses to your rather antagonistic doubting, I like him so much more. And Mike, one thing about questioning God. If He's real, and He knows everything, unlike us mere mortals, why would you even begin to try to analyze His way of thinking and actions? With our limited knowledge and inability to see what hasn't yet happened, it's foolish to try and second-guess the methods of an all-knowing Being. Just because something seems a certain way now doesn't mean it's not part of a bigger plan. Something that we're not capable of seeing the end results of. How could the creation expect to understand the Creator? As someone who searches for facts and evidence, you should be able to grasp this concept. One last thing. You'd better hope Garvin's wrong. And there's two reasons why. One, if he's right, you're wrong, and the eternal fate of your soul would be in jeopardy. Two, if God does love us that much, you're not open to receiving the greatest Gift anyone could hope for - the loving guidance of a perfect and all-knowing God.

Also how can you say the 4 Gospels don't agree on anything and merely contradict each other? This is a very rash statement. Sounds like someone isn't personally familiar with the Word, just like MRG said. I'm willing to discuss anything that seems like a contradiction in the Bible with you. Not saying I can change your mind on anything, but I certainly believe the Bible is God's Word and was divinely inspired, and therefore does not contain any contradictions. Now we are finite in our reasoning and understanding, and by simply picking random pieces of the Word we can't expect to have a thorough understanding of all of it, which could lead to confusion and hasty labels of contradiction. I'm willng to wager you've never read the Good Book objectively, and with a passion and willingness to seek out what the Living God has to say to us. If you look at it with and attitude already against it when you start reading, of course you can fool yourself into seeing whatever you want to. The Bible itself says "here a little and there a little". There are principles of how the Lord operates. Once we have learned some of these principles, we will be able to better understand his implied meaning in His Words.

Sorry to keep posting on here, but I can't let it go. Science doesn't disagree with the Word. You just have to dig a little deeper instead of repeating common arguments you've heard other non-believers toss out there. And to answer your question about the Book of Exodus, it's not like God just came unexpectedly in that particular scenario and started killing children. There were warnings, and that was the 10th plague. Meaning there were 9 others before it. I think after the first 9 plagues the Pharaoh should have had an inkling of an idea to let the Lord's people go. Thats what you're talking about here. 9 times the Pharaoh declined to free the Israelites, and different things happened as a consequence. The 10th time God meted judgement onto the Egyptians was the first-born son ordeal. Also the Egyptians were keeping the Israelites as slaves. Not exactly model citizens God was dealing with. Believe me. With a mind for reverential study of the Word of God, you don't have to throw out any passages of the Bible. I agree, that would be cheating and very cheap. It's also underhanded and un-informed on your part to suggest that as a Christian, that's what we have to do to make sense of the Word.

August 9, 2009  06:18 AM ET

As far as evidence of Jesus Christ and historical proof of events in the Bible having really happened, I suggest you look at the Shroud of Turin. Learn about the holographical images which to this day no scientist has ever been able to duplicate. The image of Jesus on that sheet is a one of a kind artifact. There's nothing like it in the rest of the world. This isn't my opinion, it's a fact. This particular artifact has been researched by the brightest scientific minds in the world. More time has been spent on it than perhaps any other single object. and they've never been able to duplicate the type of image represented on the Shroud. This indicates we're dealing with something super-natural. Something called the Resurrection.

And to say we have nothing but faith!! Faith is obviously a phenomenon of which you know nothing about! To be critical of someone for grasping something which you have failed to do is very narrow-minded, and reflective of a less than stellar understanding of things which are not obvious to you. Like MRG said, perhaps you should spend more time in the Word. The Bible plainly states, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." Without a fundamental understanding of the Word of God it's impossible for you to grasp the intracacies of the Word, and of faith. Therefore you would be in a position of making rationalizations about something which you are not qualified to be making judgements on. Again, I invite you to respond or leave a comment on my user page on FN or something. You seem to have somewhat of an interest in searching for answers, and wherever you've got your "answers" on Christianity was a source of half=truths and if I dare say, lies. Misinformation will only feed your confusion on the existence and greatness of our Heavenly Father. It's a shame that so many people cast a walk with God to the side because they have not been taught what Christianity can really be, and what the Word can do for you. I'm not saying all Christians are good people. Far from it. I understand the Crusades were a terrible, terrible thing. They were also contrary to the Word of God and the Nature of God. But to leave your experience with Christianity at that would be to sell yourself short. There's so much that is misconstrued about God and the Word I can't even begin to list examples here, which is why I encourage you to contact me, or at least re-read the Bible, and not through eyes jaded with dis-belief, but with an open heart and an open mind. If you are sincere, the Lord will meet with you and show revelations to you beyond anything I can mention here. I know, because He did it for me!
