I'm old enough to remember the old hair-coloring commercials..."Does she, or doesn't she?"  I keep getting the mental picture of Brett Favre, sitting in his den in Mississippi, asking himself "Do I, or don't I?"  The only problem is this:  What question is he trying to answer.  Consider these possibilities --

            1) Do I want to stay retired or do I want to play?

            2) Do I want to subject my body to more stress and pain?

            3) Do I want to stick it up Green Bay President Ted Thomas' backside?

            4) Do i have the biggest ego this side of Mount Olympus?

            5) Do I care if I tarnish a Hall of Fame career by appearing selfish, petty, and phony?

Speaking as a Chicago Bear fan...we always hated playing against Favre for one reason -- he was the best in the game.  We may not like the Packers or any of their players as a matter of principle...but most Bears fans would admit to respecting and even admiring Favre's talents.  And those talents were extraordinary.  What appears to be even more extraordinary is the man's talent for grabbing, holding, and hogging the spotlight.

It is my opinion...and that's all this is, my opinion...Favre has now tarnished beyond repair his legacy.  Oh, he will still make it to the Hall of Fame, but many people outside of Green Bay -- and more than a handful in Green Bay -- have had their eyes opened and esteem for Favre has been forever diminished, simply because he could not let go of his own hurt feelings and ride a wave of good sentiment into the halls of legend in Canton, OH.

It seems like he has been living a child's (paraphrased) song -- "Favre, Favre, go away...come and play another day!"  The only song I'm hearing after so many "I'm retired, not coming back" statements from the new Minnesota Vikings QB is "Liar, liar, pants on fire....."

I used to admire Brett Favre.  Now, sadly, because of his own enormous ego, I feel sorry for him.

i agree completely with what you've said here. HE has tarnished his legacy and i see him as a man i used to admire, but now can't stand to hear about. his ego is sickening and i just hate that we will still have to hear about his retirement/comeback next off season. the majority of people feel this way towards him.... i know he doesn't care, but it's just sad to see what he was a few yrs ago and how he is precieved today due to his own selfish actions.
