The SF 49ers have finally announced their starting QB for the season. No surprise. It's Sean Hill who had a winning record last season after replacing OC Mike Martz's boy JT O'Sullivan, the fumble machine. Despite the desire by some people in the organization to give the job to former 1st pick Alex "the bust" Smith, coach Mike Singletary finally did the right thing even though he was clearly not impressed by either QB in training camp. Smith needed to blow the coach away with a great training camp & he just didn't deliver. He will now stand on the sideline & hopefully learn by watching a career 3rd stringer, who once given the chance to play proved that, although he is no star, is a good game manager, who makes few mistakes.
As for the only winning Bay Area team. The San Jose Sharks have had a very quiet offseason. For most teams with their record that would be good. Not for a team that finished the regular season with the NHL's best record & then proceeded to collapse in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, which BTW is SOP for this team. At present there is a rumor that there was an attempt to trade Patrick Marleau to Ottawa for disgruntled star Dany Heatley, but Marleau wouldn't waive his NTC. The problem is the trade would do nothing for the Sharks. One soft player replaced by a whiny, spoiled bad apple. This team won't win anything until the soft stars who dissappear in the playoffs are replaced by strong leaders who raise their performance come April.
Continuing with hockey, the league will apparently now run the Phoenix Coyotes. Commissioner Gary Bettman for some reason is against the team being purchased by someone with money who will move the team back to Canada. I don't understand this. They are a failure in the desert, even with Wayne Gretzky there. The absolute terror over moving a team to Hamilton confuses me. Is this about protecting the Maple Leafs, a franchise that hasn't won anything in decades? The economy decides what happens anyway. The most successful Bay Area team is out of business because the league went bankrupt (SJ Sabrecats of the Arena League).
This leaves college football. I can hardly wait to see San Jose State's first game against some little school down south. I think they're called the Trojans. (eyes roll). One more "body bag" game so my alma mater can make some money while the players get killed.
