NFL Blog Spot
Week 2
Here are my thoughts of the NFL preseason through week 2. I'm going to talk a little Jay Cutler Vs Kyle Orton, my impressions of the Packers & the 49ers naming a starting QB.
Orton/Cutler
Kyle Orton (Den 0-2-0)
Kyle has made some progress since his week one meltdown in which he threw 3 interceptions against the 49ers. In week 2 of the preseason against Seattle, Orton completed 18 of 26 passes for 182 yards. Including a touchdown strike to Brandon Stokley. It would have been two TD's if Jabar Gaffney wouldn't have dropped a guaranteed 6pts in the end zone. Not bad right? Wrong! All of the above has been forgotten. All anyone remembers from this Kyle Orton outing is his LEFT HANDED throw to the end zone on fourth down which was easily picked off by Ken Lucas of the Seahawks.
Jay Cutler (Chi 1-1-0)
The Cutler honeymoon in Chicago is going as planned. The 'toast' of the town never ceases to impress. His home opener at Soldier Field against an outstanding New York Giants defense can easily be put in the 'successful' column. He looked like the sharp pro bowl quarterbacks that we've grown accustom to see since last season in the Mile High city. He completed 8 of 13 passes and one TD to TE Desmond Clark. Passes we're caught by 6 different receivers. His release was quick and he was accurate as hell, even on the move. He threw an amazing 38 yard pass inside the 5 to WR-Aromashodu (is that how you spell it?). Anyways it made me get up off the couch. J
It'll be interesting to see how this Sunday's matchup between the Bears and Broncos unfolds as Cutler makes his return to Denver.
Green Bay Packers (2-0-0)
How impressive have these guys been so far? They looked stellar in their first two outings of the '09 preseason. Their defense has racked up 9 Takeaways! Not too shabby! And how about that B.J. Raji? He was dominant in his playing time against the Bills this past week. No tackles, but come on, he's a rookie playing on a defense that is still experimenting Don Capers' 3-4 Defense. His speed and size are impossible to ignore when you're lined up in front of him. He may be a rook, but respect what he can do, or you're going to get burned.
Aaron Rodgers is 'the big cheese' this year, and is playing like it. He has 200yds passing in the stat column since the start of the preseason. He performed some serious surgery on the Bills defense in week 2, going 8 for 9 for 98 yards and two touchdowns. This will be Aaron's year, just read want fantasy experts are saying! Hopefully he doesn't take too much action away from my boy Ryan Grant though.
Shaun Hill to be starting QB by the bay?
Really? Already? How? How can u already name a starting QB after last game? Just look at the stats. Nate Davis played twice as good as both Alex Smith and Shaun Hill. Who's Nate Davis you ask? He's a rookie out of Ball State who completed 6 of 11 passes for 67 yards and a TD. Compare that to 3 for 9 - 30yds and 3 for 7 - 20yds for Smith and Hill respectively. I just don't get it. Yes, Davis played against the 3's. But why not keep the competition open to the three of them? Clearly the 'contenders' for the QB spot have not impressed anyone. Make them fight it out, put up some numbers and maybe San Fran can feel comfortable relying on someone. I'm anxious to the next two games, if Hill is as inconsistent as he's been so far and that nobody proves better, the confidence level of that team won't be very high at all. Personally, I think that either one will play so bad or get hurt, that by week 10 the other will have to come in and 'Papelbon' the end of the season. Bay area people better start crossing some fingers in a serious way if they want to amount to anything this season.
P.S. Speaking of the Niners,How about that Glen Coffee? Boys got skills!
Rookie Initiation
'Ok, so Mark Sanchez, you're starting tonight! Plus, i'll name you starting QB if you play good IN Baltimore against THE RAVENS DEFENSE!!'... (I bet that's how it went down with Rex.) HA! Good look SoCal! (Can you tell I'm a Ravens fan?)
I like Mark though; I think he was really good at USC. I think he's ok so far in the NFL to. But wait until that intense tan washes off his face when he plays those November & December games inside the division. Will he be the Sanchez the Jets traded up for in the draft? Doubt it.
He was named the Jets starter today for week 1 vs Houston. Good luck Cali! You'll need it when you have to deal with the NY Media scrutiny you'll be receiving along the road this season.
