Leon Powe shoots for playoffs - BostonHerald.com

Leon Powe was key part in Celtics depth of their bench and he signed with the Cavaliers. I don't know if it is just a mistake or it hasn't came out yet but ESPN.com has Powe as a fifth string PF! FIFTH STRING! In my last blog I had Boston at #1 in the East and Cleveland at #2  now it is switched around while Boston loses him and Cleveland gaining. My answer to the question is, Powe should start over Varejao. Powe is a perfect target for the passing skills of LeBron James. Powe is versatile and athletic 6' 8'' player. He averaged 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds those extra points and rebounds from the bench or starter would be nice for the Cavs. If Leon Powe comes off the bench under Anderson Varejao it'll be an upset. Again ESPN.com said he was a fifth string and I really haven't heard anything about this if there is gonna be a battle at the PF postion.

Varejao averaged 8.6 ppg, 7.2 rpg. Powe comes off the bench. IMO

Powe is younger, more athletic and more of a defensive problem for the other team just because how tall and athletic he is.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a fifth string in basketball. Fifth man maybe?

None of this really matters much, because Powe won't even be able to play until February at the earliest. So it's a bit premature to be talking about who should start. It is questionable whether he will even be a major contributor, let alone be able to start. The Cavs are taking a chance, and are just hoping for the best.

I prefer to see Andy coming off the bench. But not because I think he isn't a capable starter. A capable 5th man is just as important as any starter, and this is where Varajeo is at his best.

The high energy and spastic nature of his disruptive defensive nature cannot be maintained for 38 minutes a game. He is at his best during short spurts where he not only smothers whoever he is covering, but often snuffs out entire plays on his own. Even as a fifth man, he is still the one I want to see on the floor in the closing minutes of a game.

Leon Powe is a good talent, and I hope the gamble pays off for the Cavs. If he were to return to his prior level of play in time for the playoffs, it would just be one more quality player on the floor. The Cavs won't be giving up much, if anything, when Andy is resting.
