Football is a tough and brutal sport.
FACT.
If you want to play a "gentlemans sport" go play golf or tennis and eat some wine and cheese with crackers.
Rich Rodriguiez doesnt deserve this. I am no fan and think he might havbe been better off staying where he was at, West Virginia. Michigan is similar to Notre Dame in the fact they believe they should be in the running for a national title.
That just isnt realistic in todays college football scene.
But complaining they were "overworked"???
Maybe because Rich doesnt want a repeat performance of last year is why they were being "worked so hard."
Please.
You are playing Division I football. This isnt HS where you arent playing against All Americans week in and week out.
Man up.
Shaun King nailed it on the head during College Football Live recently.
20 hours a week is an unrealistic expectation. Most teams work out with weights twice a week for 2.5 hours. Thats 5 right there. Plus game film of your opponent and watching your own film of practices. 5 days a week at 2 hours. Thats another 10 hours and is 15 right there not including PRACTICE time.
To be good most teams have to go over the 20 hours a week.
Football is a sport of blood, sweat and tears. Yeah, I said it, tears. Because I remember during HS several times thinking during Two a days I was going to die. Its called "Hell Week" for a reason. I remember wind sprints where I felt like passing out and the burning sensation in my lungs and drinking the sweetest elixir known to mankind after, water. Since Gatorade was saved for Game Days.
I dont think it really matters in the long run since I dont see Rich lasting past 3 years but these Wolverines are acting more like "Pups."

Good blog. 20 hours a week isn't a lot of time. I'm sure 20 hours is being surpassed by a lot of programs (especially the ones that want to win), and you know what those players do: THEY SHUT THE **** UP ABOUT IT!!
I am a Wolverines fan, and although I'm on the fence with R.R., the fact is that Michigan football needs someone like him. Not that anything was all that wrong with the "Michigan Man" of Schembechler and his successors but R.R. has brought players to Michigan that wasn't all that interested in the program before. Yes, he had some transfers and he messed up with Feagin but if he is given time, and if players buy in this program will be very good again, very soon.

(quote #1) Great Blog, National Champions work way harder! To deal with my Trojans and others like Texas, Florida, LSU, you know the elite. The maze and blue have a long way to go to restore that tradition, you have to blame that on the recruiting, that's why they didn't get pryor.

My problem is that we are all forgetting why the kids are there for and that is for an EDUCATION. I don't see a team in the film room 2 hrs a day for 5 days, maybe 2 days tops but they have to have their study time for their schoolwork.
I'm not against hard work but if they are to spend only 20 hours a week then so be it. Maybe allow a little more time before the season starts but when it does, you don't practice on Sat and Sun, you don't do nothing on Friday except runthroughs so basically you have 2-3 hrs a day for 4 days a week (8-12), take your weights at 2 hrs a day twice a week (4 hrs) 1-2 hrs runthrough on Friday and that leaves approximately 5-7 hrs for film, additional weight workouts, or whatever else they need to do to prep for a game. 20 hrs is more than enough time.

Considering how much the school is paying for these kids to come there with scholarships. They should treat it like a full time job. And if they have any aspirations to go to the NFL, they better learn what a full time job is because that is what there job will be. What I don't get is the debate between "Manditory and optional" training because the entire sport is optional. If you don't like it... get out. No one is holding a gun to your head.
Great blog DJ.
