The Lugoff-Elgin Demons took their first road trip of the year to West Florence and came away with a decisice, 31-3 victory over the Knights.
West Florence couldn't muster anything on their first possession of the game after taking the opening kickoff. After the three and out, LE would take over and proceed to drive down the field. West Florence would hold the Demons inside the red zone as Grayson Quick would boom a field goal from within 30 yards with 7:41 left in the first quarter.
The Demon's Pain Train defense would continue to make plays and hold West Florence on their next possession giving the ball back to the offense. The offense would again take care of business as E. J. Ruiz would cap off the drive with his first of two touchdowns on the night. This score would come from two yards out. Quick would boot the ball through the uprights for the extra point, as he did all night long. With 1:35 left in the first quarter, LE would be on top 10-0.
After a Trey Poston 35 interception return was called back for a penalty, West Florence would only get a few more yards but be stymied. The ensuing 32 yard field goal attempt was wide and thus, giving the ball back to LE. The Demons would not be able to score on this drive and punted the ball back to WF. However, With the Knights moving deep into Demon territory, LE's Davonte Alexander would intercept an errant pass at the Demon 12 and return it back to the 39 yard line with 4:45 left in the half.
Less than 90 seconds later, the demons would return the favor as West Florence would cause a turnover with an interception. Lugoff-Elgin's defense would make another statement as they held on a fourth down and take over on downs at their own 31 yard line with 1:34 left. The Demons would make the most of this opportunity as E. J. Ruiz would put an exclamation point on the drive as he plowed one yard to paydirt with only 14 seconds left in the half. Quick's kick would give the Demons a 17-0 advantage going into the half.
Lugoff-Elgin's opening drive would stall out after three plays and punt the ball back to WF. On the Knight's second play of the half, they would fumble and the Demons would pounce on it to put the offense back on the field with 9:10 left in the third quarter. Less than two minutes later, LE's Stephen Bonaparte would muscle his way into the end zone from two yards out. The kick would put LE up 24-0 at the 7:03 mark of the third quarter.
West Florence would finally get on the board in the third quarter with a 34 yard field goal.
LE's Will Dorton would quarterback the last scoring drive of the game. Behind strong running by Sophomore Dalton Simons, Dorton would call a quarterback sneak play with 6:33 left in the game and score from inside of the one yard line. Quick's kick was perfect again and make the final margin of victory, 31-3.
-- Stephen Bonaprte would be selected as the Kool 102.7 Player of the Game. "Bonecrusher" would have 10 carries for 54 yards and a touchdown along with a quarterback sack and several hard hits on Knight players.
-- Halfway through the first quarter Coach Scott Jones had to get the referee's attention. Somehow, West Florence coaches could hear what we were saying on our headsets. At the end of the conversation, the headsets were put back in the containers and we didn't use them the rest of the game.
-- Several fans were late getting to the game due to a very bad wreck on I-20 around the 125 marker. According to the Highway Patrol, two people died in the wreck and traffic was shut down for a couple of hours. In fact the cheerleder bus got caught up in the traffic and finally arrived with around five minutes to go in the first half.
-- Kudos to a group of students affectionally called "The Paint Crew." Jonathon Miles, Max Fowler, Ward Yount, Brandon Cemprola, Ty Robinson, Jordan Veverica, and Parker Singleton. These guys paint their bodies every week and spell out "Go Demons" on the front and have players numbers and names on the back. They are very vocal in support of LE football. They have now added a home made 4' X 6' blue LE flag to their aresnal. This week, since the Demons were wearing the road white uniforms, the Paint Crew followed suit and had the white road paint on.
-- Next week, the Pain Train Express will roll out of the station on track number 1 for a short trip to visit our rival, the Camden Bulldogs. This should be a great matchup with two high scoring offenses.
