That being said, I seriously questioned Jim Tressel's vanilla and close-to-the-vest play calling. You can wonder if it left a big win for Ohio State on the field. After watching USC go for it on 4th and goal on their opening drive, why not set the tone and go for it yourself in a similar situation? You're home, the game is tied early in the beginning, and if you fail - at worse you have USC pinned deep near the student section. I wouldn't have thought twice about it.
I don't care that the opponent was Marshall - the fact that Virginia Tech scored 52 points with 601 yards is impressive NO MATTER THE OPPONENT, especially with their mundane offenses of late. One little problem, I still don't know that QB Taylor can pass. I have a feeling we'll find out this week against Nebraska.
One week you clamp down on Georgia, the next you're getting scorched by a Conference USA team while ranked #5, at home. At least they won't be exactly like Texas Tech, who made it all the way to 10-0 and #2 before a 65 - 21 beat down in Norman, Oklahoma. No worries though Oklahoma State, Oklahoma also lost 45 - 35 last year and made it to the BCS title game (albeit to a much better team than Houston).
Did anyone else catch the beat down Toledo laid on Colorado? Two weeks, two consecutive flops. Dial up the heat for Coach Hawkins. Same goes for Al Groh at Virginia after another embarrassing slap down at home. At least TCU is a much better opponent than Division I-AA William & Mary. I'd also bet Mark Snyder isn't feeling that comfortable down at Marshall either after the Virginia Tech beat down.
I'll tell you right now, I don't think LSU is all that great. After watching them squeak by Washington (as I said before, Washington more of lost the game), their lackluster performance over Vanderbilt reaffirmed my belief. Yes they may get better, but right now, they won't be within 5 touchdowns of Florida. Or 3 of Alabama/ Ole Miss. Yet, they sit at #7 in the Coaches Poll, and #9 in the AP. Who are these voters again?
The heat could be on a few more coaches should they lose this weekend. Charlie Weis at Notre Dame, Steve Kragthorpe at Louisville, and new comer Chip Kelly at Oregon (yes, in only his third game). Dial the thermometer to scorching should Groh, Hawkins, or Synder lose (again) this weekend.
In closing - a few words of advice.
Charlie Weis - if you're up and can run out the clock and win, proceed to do so. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, and more importantly, do not call quick dart pass plays which run no time off the clock. Jim Tressel and Ohio State - show up ready to play next week or a resurgent Toledo could be the first Ohio team to beat you in quite a while. Lane Kiffin, Tennessee - Show up this week, please. No one enjoys a 96 - 0 type score. Except maybe an infuriated Urban Meyer. Bill Synder, Kansas State - Please coach as if you just received a five year contact extension (as to why I'll never know). Al Groh - Feel free to begin polishing up your resume.
