Hello once again. Before looking forward to week 2 in the NFL, let's take a quick look back at the week that was the NFL Week 1:
Miami 7 @ Atlanta 19 (No sophomore slump for Matt Ryan, at least to start. ATL's D stopped the Wildcat, and Miami looked lost as a result of it. Teams playing the Dolphins this year will be taking a look at what Atlanta's defense did.)
Kansas City 24 @ Baltimore 38 (I would never have thought that entering the 4th quarter, that the Chiefs would be hanging in there against the Ravens. While the Ravens did get a W, there might be cause for concern. One thing that Ravens fans should not be concerned with: Joe Flacco. Just like Matt Ryan, he is not starting the year with a sophomore slump.)
Philadelphia 38 @ Carolina 10 (OMG Jake "Daylight come and you've got to" Delhomme (Thanks Chris Berman). What a terrible performance. Trying to shake off the dreadful playoff game against the Cardinals last season, Delhomme, had 4 INT's and a fumble, giving him 11 turnovers in his last two games. The Eagles took advantage, but now they have to be concerned with McNabb's injury. Hopefully for them, the injury will only force him out a week or two.
Denver 12 @ Cincinnati 7 (By far the craziest game of the week. Only the Bengals could have lost on a play like that. But, the game never should have been that close. The Bengals were supposed to have this prolific offense with a healthy Carson Palmer, and nothing happened. Not a good start for a team who some say (myself included) has some playoff aspirations. Josh McDaniels is breathing a huge sigh of relief.
Minnesota 34 @ Cleveland 20 (This was supposed to be about Brett Favre, but AP stole the show. His 64-yard TD run was epic and possibly the greatest TD run of his career; he even mentioned it. One bit of concern for the Vikings: de ja vu with the punt return for a TD, though it was against the best special teams man in the game; Josh Cribbs. And the Browns finally scored their first offensive touchdown since November 17 of last season. Congrats!
New York Jets 24 @ Houston 7 (Another game I got wrong that I did not see coming. Mark Shanchez did not play like a rookie, and Rex Ryan has that defense looking good. What a pathetic performance by the Texans. If they don't win this week, you can almost certaintly say good-bye to the postseason.)
Jacksonville 12 @ Indianapolis 14 (These games are always close. But when the Colts D needed to make a stand, without Bob Sanders, they came up huge stopping a two-pt. conversion and stopping the Jaguars on their final drive.)
Detroit 27 @ New Orleans 45 (Fantasy football players rejoice. Drew Brees is fantasy gold. Yes, it was against the Lions, but if they offense clicks like this for the majority of the season, the Saints could find their way playing in the Super Bowl. That shows just how impressive they were on Sunday.)
Dallas 34 @ Tampa Bay 21 (T.O. who? That's what Tony Romo is saying. He had three TD passes of 42, 66, and 80 yards. Yikes! The defense did give up about 450 yards which is a concern, but overall, the Cowboys start the year on a good and quiet note.)
San Francisco 20 @ Arizona 16 (Super Bowl hangover? That might be what some people are saying of the Cardinals performance. The 49ers DO have a great defense, but without Breaston, and having a less than 100% Boldin and during the game Warner, the Cardinals just didn't have it. If they want to repeat as division champs, they can't afford another performance like this one.)
Washington 17 @ New York Giants 23 (The Giants defense is scary. Osi Umenyiora played great including getting a TD on a forced fumble. The Redskins struggled throughout much of the day which they might for the season as well, but that Giants defense is going to make a lot of offenses look foolish this season.)
St. Louis 0 @ Seattle 28 (New season, new coaching staff, same old Rams. No offense, missed field goal, blocked field goal for a TD called back because of too many men on the field, ugh!)
Chicago 15 @ Green Bay 21 (This is a night Jay Cutler would like to forget. 4 INT's is a career high or low depending on how you look at it. The Packers new defense looked very good and Aaron Rodgers' GW TD pass to Greg Jennings was a great play for the Packers. Bad news for the Bears: Brian Urlacher is out for the year. Could spell the beginning of the end for the Bears 2009 NFL season.)
Buffalo 24 @ New England 25 (I was just as shocked as everyone else that the Bills had an 11 point lead with just over 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter. But Tom Brady is Tom Brady and led the comeback with 2 TDs to Ben Watson. Leodis McKelvin's fumble was a contributing factor in the Bills' loss, but the Bills offense had too many penalties to put all of the blame on McKelvin. They need to win on Sunday against Tampa Bay.)
San Diego 24 @ Oakland 20 (San Diego now knows they can't just waltz through the AFC West. They barely escaped from the Black Hole with a victory. Darren Sproles played great, and L.T. better watch out. He needs to recover from his ankle injury and play angry so as to avoid losing more time to Sproles. We might be seeing the end of L.T. in San Diego.)
Well overall, a 13-3 start to the season. Not bad. Some big games to watch for this week include:
New Orleans @ Philadelphia 1:00 ET FOX
New England @ New York Jets 1:00 ET CBS
New York Giants @ Dallas 8:20 ET NBC
I will be back later with my picks for the week. Until then, have a great day and a great rest of the week. C ya.
